Anyone taking Unisom?

I'm taking it a few times a week for nausea. I'm not taking the b6 because I haven't found any in a low enough dose. I'm guessing the b6 just helps even more, you don't have to take them together right? Also, will unisom become addicting? Thanks!

Re: Anyone taking Unisom?

  • Nope Unisom is not addictive, the only problem I see with it is it makes mr drowsy and it can lose it's effectiveness overtime as your body gets used to it.

I saw my doc today. She said one or 2 B6s a day is good to keep away nausea, she didn't say if there was ever a specific amount per MG I should be taking... what were you told? And a half or whole of the unisom at night.

I don't have much nausea, only when I don't eat enough food, or let myself go too far in between meals. SO I haven't had to test this theory, but I was informed this info today so since it's fresh in my memory I figured I'd try to help.

  • I take a half unisom with 50 mg of b6 before bed. The first night I took a full unisom pill and couldn't keep my eyes open the next day. I also take 50 mg of b6 in the morning. It seems to help some days. Other days not so much.

Last time I didn't notice the unisom as being addictive when I took it while pg with DS.

  • The max B6 you should take is 200mg/day. In the studies looking at B6 and m/s, they used 25-50mg twice daily to three times daily (I'm a pharmacist so I probably researched this more than was needed Smile).

I was only able to find 100mg tablets, so I cut them in half and take 50mg twice daily. You can also take the B6 alone if the Unisom is too sedating; that's what I've been doing and it seems to working pretty good.

Okay! Is it okay though, to just take the Unisom without the extra B6? The Unisom knocks me right out and so therefore takes away my "night sickness".  I might start taking the b6 too but I might also sometimes only take the Unisom, if that's okay. It seems to be enough for me. I take half at night.

  • Yep, you can take either one by itself. It used to be sold as a combination pill so that's probably why doctors recommend using both, but they work by different mechanisms so they don't have to be taken together.

  • I tried B6. And threw it up every time. I am now taking 1/2 of a pill of unisom at night before I go to bed and most days it helps!!!
  • I take a bariatric multivitamin with 16mg of b6 three times a day and a half Unisom (50mg) before bed. The Unisom makes me a bit sleepy, but doesn't knock me out. I was taking the b6 alone and that didn't touch my nausea. Add the Unisom and I'm actually functioning most days. I don't find it habit-forming.
