Dresser or Change Table?

Can you use a dresser instead of a change table if you put the change pad on top of it? Is it a size issue? I just feel like the drawers would hold everything much better, and keep it clean looking, than those change tables that show everything...

 Anyone else do this?

Re: Dresser or Change Table?

  • A lot of people use the dresser for a changing area.  Just make sure to secure the dresser to the wall and the changing pad to the dresser.  The ones that look like they would be best for the changing area set up are the large wide ones that are lower to the ground.  Ours is more vertical and just a bit too tall for me to be comfortable there, so I now change my toddler on the floor, but it's perfect for MH.

  • We did. DS has a wide 6 drawer lower dresser and we secured the changing pad to it (our dresser came with a matching wood changing pad holder - for lack of a better way to descrbe it!).  We used the top dresser drawer to store all our diaper changing essentials.  It worked great until around 9 months when DS became a little demon at diaper changing time and would not stay put.  That's when we transitioned diaper changing to the floor and removed the changing pad from the dresser. Now, there is more space on top of his dresser for other stuff and we don't have to worry about where we're going to store a changing table that we won't use again for a while, if at all!

All of this.  They can keep using a dresser forever, but will quickly outgrow a changer.  A dresser is a much better investment, IMO.

  • We have done a dresser in both of our nurseries and it works great for us!

  • We are using the IKEA Hemnes 8 drawer and love it.  Ever since dd got super wiggly and hard to manage during changes, it has made me glad to have the dresser instead of a changer.  If she tries to wiggle off the pad, it is not that big of deal because there is more surface area on top of the dresser.  Most changers only have room for the pad or the pad + a tiny bit of space for a few things.

We chose to not attach the pad to the dresser though because I believe it provides a false sense of security.  It is super important to make sure you always have a hand on dc.

  • We will have both and then some!

There will be a dresser in the nursery that was originally to hold the changing station supplies. We picked a medium sized dresser as opposed to a longer shorter version for less bending. We will also have a traditional changing table on the main floor. Two babies two floors, its a peace of mind thing. As of now, we are also talking about turning my bathroom vanity (no sink) into a changing station the first few months while baby is still with us. This will depend on how well the pad stays in place since there is no great way to secure it.

  • We went with a dresser and put a changing pad on top. It works great! And later when she is older, we can just take the changing pad off and she has a dresser to use instead of a useless piece of furniture.
