Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Got a boy??... come on in!

DS was circumcised and it healed perfectly so there were no issues.  We put A&D on it at least twice a day (morning and night) and usually one or two more times during the day, so that it won't adhere back to the skin.

My question is, when do boys outgrow the whole "turtle head going into hiding" stage?  The tip of his penis is always tucked in the shaft until I pull the skin back with every diaper change and during bathtime.

I have asked the pedi about it at almost every well-visit and they all don't seem to be concerned with it and assure me it's normal, but I still think it's weird.  I'll ask again next month at his 9 month check up but thought I'd check in here!

TIA

at my last visit the doc pulled the skin back and detached the skin that was reattaching...DS was uncomfy for a little bit but was ok.

This happened at our 4 month well visit. I didn't realize I was supposed to still be putting on Vaseline! :o(

  • And this is the problem....we weren't told what we were supposed to do with it after they sent us home from the hospital. I was told not to touch it, just leave it alone, and when we had our first checkup the doc had to peel the skin back ALOT!! It sucked....DS was fine, by my heart hurt seeing him bleed like that. I'm pretty good about it now, but once in awhile it grows back together. I hope it stops trying to reattach soon. Aquafore every night baby!!

my nephew had to be circumcised again at the age of 2 since the skin reattached... my SIL had no clue about peeling the skin back...

i mentioned pulling back the skin at the hospital after the circumcision and the doctor looked at me weird and said not to touch it. i didn't listen to her and did it any way... i was frightened to go through what my SIL did.

Yes, this is my exact fear! I don't want to go through that again.

  • We've been having this issue as well.  I've been doing my best to keep the skin pulled back since the doctor had to do it, but I think I'm too gentle.  She put some oomph behind it when she did it.  I didn't know that there was even such a thing as boys having a hidden penis.  I also didn't know that it could last so long.

  • I guess we've had fool's luck b/c it hasn't attached. I try to get in all the cracks and crevices when I bathe him, so maybe that's been part of our saving grace.

Now my nephew's repeated circ's make so much more sense, though. I just thought SIL had a crummy pediatrician who kept botching it.

Our pedi said somewhere between 12 and 18 months, when the fat in the groin area has decreased? I guess our LOs are a bit fatty in that area and that's what causes them to have turtlenecks.

    Good to know!!

I'm thankful we were told by our pedi at our first check up with her that we were to pull it back with every diaper change and use a&d very frequently.  We have been able avoid it from adhereing so far, so we'll keep doing what we are doing.  I was just curious when the turtle stayed out on it's own lol

It does make sense though that once the fat goes down in the groin area it won't be pushed up anymore.

In all seiousness though, my pedi said to keep putting the ointment on until he's out of diapers!!  Just to be on the safe.  It really is sad that the the hospitals and some doctors don't advise of this, I would imagine it hurts pretty badly to have the skin pulled back down to the point of bleeding :( poor boys!

Same here. DS got his circ while we were in the NICU and I never saw the nurses do this during diaper changes and no one said anything about it to me. I saw a few people on TB say they do it so I try to when I remember but we've had no problems with it reattaching.

    Jfresh -

Oh my, your LO is simply adorable!!!!

  • Well, my DS is almost 2.5 and still has a "turtle".

We have not had issues with adhering and our pedi has always said to "leave it be".

She explained circs are done with much more "room" these days. At each checkup they take a look and it's always fine.

  • I put vaseline on it for about a week after his circumcision, but nothing since and we've had no issues with reattachment. I do gently pull the skin back a little bit once in a while to clean it really well, but other than that I just leave it be. Putting ointment on it multiple times a day seems a bit much at this point, especially if there's not a problem to begin with.

  • I was also told not to touch it, and it reattached.  Thankfully after reading about it I started to slowly pull it back... finally one day it completely unattached it self and so much white cheesy guck came out from under the skin. Gross.  I felt like the worst mother in the world... I bathe my child. I promise!

Yeah... now I know.  If you can't see the ridge of the head of the penis, you need to pull it back.

  • DS1's circ reattached.  Pedi said to leave it but at 18 months it was still adhered so she gave us some steroid cream to use for I think 1-2 months everyday and it detached.  Right now he still has a buried penis (turtling lol) but I think thats cause he still has a bit of a fat pad in the groin area.  He's 2 yo and it hasn't reattached since using the cream.

DS2's cric reattached but hes only 6 months.  I only pull it back in the bath to clean it.  I'll wait til hes older to ask for the steroid cream which I'm certain will help it detach.  Sometimes it even detaches by itself as the LO gets older.
