Junior or II

Hello everyone,

My husband wants our son to be a junior but I want him to have my last name.

My husband's last name is Arauz and mine is Subiria.  If our child's name is Pierre David Arauz Subiria, could I still make him a junior or will he be the II?

Thoughts, ideas would be appreciated.

Re: Junior or II

  • He won't technically be a second or a Jr. Without having the exact same name, but you could do whatever you wanted, you could give him an entirely different name and put Jr. after it, it just wouldn't be true.

  • OK, thanks so much!

  • Neither.

The two names would have to be identical to be a Junior/II.   In your case, you've got your maiden name in there, too, so they're not the same name.

FYI-Give serious thought about this... I've known quite a few men who run into problems when they get mistaken for their father and vice versa.  It sometimes gets confusing on paperwork, etc.

  • OK, thank you for the advise.  :)
  • Juniors and II are not the same thing. Juniors share first names and II share first, middle and last name

My understanding has always been that a II is the second person in the family with the same name: FN MN LN Sr.;FN MN LS Jr or FN MN LN II

  • I think the etiquette books will say that he is neither a Jr. nor a II, but unless he is some sort of royalty or nobility, I don't think it really matters. You can still call him Pierre Jr.
  • I got it wrong. I looked it up and it says that if a son shares the exact same name as the father then he is a junior. If the son shares the exact same name as a grandfather of someone else in the family EXCEPT for the father then he is II. But I agree that you can call him junior anyway if you want. I don't think anyone is going to pull out the "rule book" and challenge your son's name.

  • traditionally Juniors have the exact same name as their fathers and II's have the exact same name as a grandfather.

  • I thought in order to be considered a Junior or II you had to have the exact same name.  I thought the child would be known as a Junior until Senior passed away and then the Junior then became II.  Nevertheless, it's confusing....

If you use your last name and your husband's, it's technically not the same name. Therefore, it's a stretch to use Jr. or II.
