Parenting after a Loss

Put away the bottles

I just sterilized the last of Pip's bottles and once they're dry they'll go into storage.  **sigh**  She's been on the sippy cup since October, but had a bottle before bed (yes, I know - all the books say a feeding shouldn't be associated with bedtime - but she was a colicky kid and anything we could do to get her to sleep - we did).

Anyway, we cut out the last bottle last week and she's been doing great, so it's time to pack them away.  I'm really proud of her for this latest unofficial milestone, but I'm sad that she's not falling asleep in my arms anymore.  (And now I have to lean over the crib and file her nails - it was so much easier to do when she was asleep on my lap - my poor back!)

Re: Put away the bottles

  • Congrats on the milestone!  I am jealous.  G still won't take enough from a sippy, so he gets 2 bottles a day (including one before bedtime, for the same reason that you broke that "rule" as well -- we are in the routine of bottle - toothbrush - bed to at least try and save his teeth).

At bedtime, he used to like a rock and snuggle after we brushed his teeth post-bottle, but now he just points at the bed and says "Po-po" (pillow), which basically means "put me down, lady".  I miss those snuggles!

We got rid of bottles at a year but I still nurse before bed.  Embarrassed

I am hanging on to that one for as long as I can since it is the only time I can get any snuggles in.

  • Aw, so grown up! Our DD nurses before bedtime and probably will until she's weaned, and I'm sure I'll miss it like crazy.

  • We are probably putting the bottles away this week too - DS doesn't need them anymore. I think we held of so we could get our nightly cuddle with him but he's not into it anymore. WAHHHHH!!!

  • Congratulations!  We are in the process of doing that with C.  He takes a bottle in the morning and before getting in his jammies, but is on the sippy the rest of the day.  Tomorrow we are cutting out the morning bottle.  How long did you wait between cutting out each bottle, if you waited at all?

  • Eris - We didn't wait long at all.  The daycare told us in late October that they would be moving her from the Infant room to the Early Toddlers in January and that one of the requirements would be no bottle. So in November I started replacing one bottle with a sippy each week (she had 4 bottles during the day - 3 formula, 1 water) and we were all set by the end of November.  It helped that she loved the sippy to begin with - she's a chowhound and the sippy allows her to drink faster than the bottle ever did.  Big Smile
