Follow up- re bottle feeding moms

Thanks for the responses!

I guess I am a little worried that we have inadvertly taught our little one to over eat and he doesn't know when to stop! Is that possible? Do I maybe need to burp him more often? Do you burp every time they pause?

i take the bottle out every time he pauses or starts pausing often but he continues to do sucking motions and gets upset... Is it possible my child needs more than 8 oz at this stage? this morning he ate 8oz! I was afraid to offer more even though he seemed to be asking for more... He is only going to be 11 weeks so I guess I worry I am missing the cues he is full and I overfed him. I will try to burp him more often. I am also trying the E.A.S.Y to better learn his cues.

Thanks for any pointers!

  • My LO doesn't really tell me she's full unless she's sleepy. I just feed her 3 oz, and these past few days she's been asking for 4 oz. I feed her the 3, burp at every oz, and wait to see if she tells me she's hungry after. She'll give a distinctive "naah" cry.

  • Wow! I've never seen a baby eat more than 8 oz!

My DS is 5 weeks and he loves to munch. He would keep eating too if I let him. He is on a nice cycle of 3-4 hours between feedings. I've been giving him 4 oz at a time since he was 1 week old which I thought was a lot at that young age. My pedi said it was fine as long as he wasn't spitting it up a lot. Just this week he's been getting hungry sooner than usual, so I started adding an extra half oz. then  he went back to his normal schedule (with a few longer stretches... Bonus!) my pedi said he may need to start cereal early to help keep his belly full longer.

If your little one has a routine number of hours between feedings, I would give her what you think will hold her over and use trial and error to see when  she needs more. Sometimes they just like to suck for comfort and you don't want to give them too much. If your LO isn't spitting up a lot though, it's possible that the feedings aren't heavy enough to stick with her and I'd ask the pedi about cereal.

Here is some good info about how much to feed at different ages. Hope this helps.

  • My DD would eat 8-10 oz per feeding around 2 months. She was always a big big eater. When we started baby food she could eat 2 to 3 times what was recommended for her age. Doctor never worried.

My brother on the other hand would eat himself sick if my mom didn't stop him. He was the only one to ever get a paci because he just wanted to suck for comfort.

If he isnt spitting it back up or in any pain there shouldn't be any thing to worry about.
