Just started pumping this morning to start my stock pile for when I return to work. I am I FTM and new to all of this stuff!lol Please help with the following questions;
-The pump came with 24mm breast shields. My areola is completely inside and rubbing against the inner wall of the shield. (Didn't know my nipples could stretch that far!!) I pumped for maybe 10min and now my nips/areolas are tender. Such as a bruised filling. Obviously these shields are not going to work for me. The question is, do I try a larger size? Or, smaller?
-When is the pumping session complete? Does the machine stop or should I know when?
Also, milk residue is around my areola as I'm pumping. Is this a sign of the shield being too small?
More questions to come.. TIA!!
Re: Random PISA questions
this. I no longer BF but I did tons of pumping to get BF to work and one thing that helped was putting a little lanolin cream on areolas to help a bit with rubbing. Also I was told to continue expressing a couple of minutes after you've "emptied" the girls
Like nursing, pumping at first can cause your nipples to feel very sore. First, as others suggested make sure you are using the correct shield size for you nipple. This will also help you get the most milk supply you can. Second, try turning down the suction at first so that you aren't putting more suction than you feel when nursing on your nipples. Ideally, the suction should be similar to what you feel when your LO nurses. Also, put some lanolin or nipple butter on your nipples after pumping and nursing and wear comfortable nipple pads. This will help your nipples become more comfortable after pumping.
For me, I know I am done pumping when the milk no longer comes out. In the morning that can take 20 minutes, in the afternoon and evening 10-15 minutes. To start with I would only pump for 10 minutes at a time while your nipples get used to it. I would try pumping right after LO has nursed for 10 minutes. This way you get the rest of the milk out and you know LO is already satiated so you can freeze whatever you pump. This worked for me and I have several liters in my freezer that DS can eat when I am at work or out with friends. Good Luck!
