Babies: 6 - 9 Months

What baby can and can't have, yet?

I'm just getting other mom opinions, because my pediatrician just said to follow baby's cues, but didn't say what she can and can't have, yet.  She said to go ahead and give her mixed cereals and stage 2 foods, now, and, if baby shows signs of curiousity, to try other foods (like a small piece of banana or a Cheerio).  I receive Gerber mailers, and based on my DD's stage (sitter), which I go by shown signs not age, she could start having whole milk yogurt (after 6 mo and she's 7) and 100% juice.  She is very curious about food but wary about trying it.  However, she's very advanced.

Would you say its ok to try the yogurt and juice, just to see what she thinks?  I don't see the harm, but I'm wondering what you think or would do?

Re: What baby can and can't have, yet?

  • I have been giving DS yogurt since about 6.5 months, and he LOVES it. Unfortunately, I didn't realize until this week how much sugar is in the YoBaby brand that I was getting, so now I need to look for something more natural. One thing I learned the hard way: if you have a small container of yogurt, split it up into resealable containers in case LO can't eat a whole container at once. I have also (per pedi's recommendation) been giving DS a little bit of very watered-down juice since about 4 months. It helps keep him from getting so constipated from cereal and all the orange veggies that he loves so much. I never let him drink more than an ounce or two at a time in order to avoid throwing off his electrolytes and all that fun stuff.

  • My doc suggested waiting on juice just as her preference she said. She did said full fat yogurt is ok to give baby. The only thing she said to avoid was berries except blueberries and citrus fruits . Otherwise all is game

Thanks, you have been very helpful, and read my mind! One of the reasons I wanted to try juice (watered down) was to help loosen her stools because of all the cereals and foods.  Our pedi said to start giving her water, but she doesn't dig it, and I think she will if there's a little something added.  I am starting to be more and more organic and health concious, for myself (who is pregnant, again) and for my family, so I always look at labels, now.  I will be sure to check on the sugar content of yogurts.

    Thanks again!

  • We just started greek yogurt and blueberries.

No juice yet-- just formula or water.

Go with your gut- if you think LO is ready then go ahead and try a small amount. If you have doubts or don't think LO is ready then wait.

We tried puffs at 6 months and DD was def not ready- we are waiting until 8 months now.

  • I wouldn't start feeding my baby processed stuff so early in life.  They'll get plenty of sugar once they start school, but that's just me.

I won't be doing juice and the such.
