DD was born with an umbilical hernia. The doctor said they are pretty common and will usually go away on their own within the first couple years. DD is 3 months today and it seems like the hernia is getting smaller, however, I can't tell if it's just because she is getting bigger it is appearing smaller or if it really is. How do you know if the hernia is gone?

I think the fact that it appears to be getting smaller is a good sign. My best friend's son had one and it never got smaller... and eventually he had surgery on it. Everything was fine. I would probably guess at her 4 month appointment the pedi will check it and let you know.
DD1.0 was born with one and by her first birthday, it looked drastically different. She still has an outie, but at this point, surgery is optional and more cosmetic in nature.
DS1 had one too. The pedi said just make sure you can push it back in so we started doing this at diaper changes and it went away in about another month or two.
