Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Cereal

Per the pediatrician I was told to start feeding my ds cereal so he can get used to a different consistency and eating off a spoon. Well it was a complete failure he HATEd it and cried and spit it all out. Any advice on how to get him to eat it and keep it down?

Re: Cereal

  • Try again in a week. There's really no rush or pressure at this point.

  • We were told to try again a week later if it didn't work out the first time. Could you maybe try mixing it with even more formula, so he may not notice the difference?

  • Glad to hear I'm not the only one! I just thought he was being stubborn and only wanted the bottle
  • We mix some fruit in with DD's to make it taste better.

  • You may want to ask your ped. if it is necessary to start now?  My ped. said that it is better for their immune system if you wait until 9 mo to introduce cereals....
  • Yeah, why the rush?  I'm not going to feed my baby cereals at all.  Nutritionally they're not that great.  I've also been told to wait until my baby shows signs of wanting to eat solids.  Then you know they are ready.
  • We're starting with some now as well (almost 6 months old now), but we're keeping it pretty thin to start with on the spoon so it's more like what he's used to and thickening it up as we go.  We also wait until about an hour after I feed him (he's EBF) so he's not full from a recent meal, but not starving for one either.  Most of it ends up on him, not in him, but it's not his main source of nutrition, just something to start learning.  Just take your time, be patient, and remember that this isn't where your LO will be getting what they need nutritionally, so it's not a substitute for an actual feeding.

No offense to the poster, but please don't do this.  It will train your child to only want sweet things and he/she will spend the rest of his/her life battling a sweet tooth.  You should start with rice cereal, then add veggies, then add sweet things like fruit last.  They need to develop palettes for savory flavors.

This. Also, DS hated the rice cereal even with formula mixed in so we tried the oatmeal and he loved it. Give it some time, there's no rush.

  • At the 4 months check up our pediatrician recommended we start trying solids. We tried rice cereal that Saturday and she had no interest. Spit it right out every time. We waited a week and tried again the next Saturday. Same thing. After about 3 Saturdaysof this with her getting a little more interested each week I decided I would try oatmeal cereal instead of rice. She loved it and has gotten it every day for several weeks now. After about a week we increased from morning cereal only to morning and evening. Tomorrow she is trying her first veggie!
