? for STMs re: lifting DC1

DD1 weighs about 23lbs. While I can get around lifting her for some things (changing on the ground instead of changing table, although this usually causes some drama; letting her eat meals not in her high chair, etc), she's still in a crib and so nap and bedtime require lifting.

When did you start lifting your older child again and how did it go? I've got help around nap and bedtime this week either from DH or other family, but starting next week (2 weeks PP) it'll get trickier.

  • I had complications so I had to wait 2 months but was told by 34 weeks I could have lifted her if I hadn't had complications. Even now at 4 months I try to limit really heavy lifting if possible.

  • I think I started around 2-3 weeks.  I definitely did at 3 weeks pp because I was on my own.  i didn't do it too much, just when it was necessary like nap time. If she got hurt, I would sit on the ground to hug and comfort her, rather than pik her up.

  • Thanks, ladies. I asked my MW when she came over today, and she said I should definitely wait until 2w PP. I said I thought the restrictions last until 6 weeks and she shrugged and said the lifting should definitely be limited for 6 weeks, but waiting that long to lift an older child is unrealistic in most cases. So I'll just try to restrict it to lifting her into and out of her crib, as I think that's the only unavoidable lifting I have to do.

  • Can she nap on the couch?  I did that when I had my second child as I didn't have much help.  He thought it was fun to nap in a different place.
