Billing?

Just received a bill for my monthly MFM u/s and they billed me for 2. I called and they said this is normal but I'm still challenging it. Did u get billed 2x for this? What about delivery?

Re: Billing?

  • It's normal. You have two babies!

  • I was billed for two growth scans/ BPPs/ NSTs... every time. Seems like we should get a half off discount or something!!

  • All of my MFM statements reflect u/s for each baby. I just went with it as they do spend quite a bit of time on each doing all the measurements.
  • I get there are 2, but it's 1 procedure. If I was having quads they would bill me 4x?

It's 2 procedures done at once. They are taking measurements of 2 babies. Yes, you would be billed 4x.

  • Yep....I also had some sticker shock w/ my MFM bills, but it makes sense....there are two babies!

  • Great question.  I'm paying my OB the 20% insurance doesn't cover now so I don't have to pay it after and they're only charging me for one delivery...I'm going to have to follow up on that.

I don't think I was charged for 2 deliveries, but I didn't really take a good look at my bill summary! Maybe someone else could chime in about delivery costs.

  • My doctor's office charges for each baby for ultrasounds and delivery, though Baby B is discounted.  DH jokes that our little girl is already costing us more money!

  • Yes you get billed twice- since they are measureing/evaulating two separate babies.

As for delivery- I never saw that bill- I called my insurance when I found out I was pregnant and they told me what my share would be if I had a vaginal delivery vs a c-section.  And there was no increase for twins.

simply put yes they would.  and it is not just one procedure since they are taking more time than a single pregnancy and looking at two babies.

My OB's office has a billing/accounting person who meets with patients at the beginning of their pregnancy to make sure they understand what their specific insurance will cover - and what it won't.  I asked then if the delivery would be billed for two, and she specifically told us it would not.

  • Oh, I forgot about the delivery question. No, my bill was not any different. However, we had BIG insurance drama because our insurance company kept seeing two bills for "Baby Boy [last name]." Poor Baby A looked like he had two sets of bloodwork, two exams, two circs... So, they rejected nearly all of Baby B's claims. The insurance company (Aet.na) said this happens with same gender twins all the time, so it may be something you want to watch out for! It took us three months to sort out that mess.

  • Thanks ladies. I'm at OB now so I will find out how delivery will be handled.

  • Make sure you have them write out each of your LO's names.  I had issues when they only used one babies name for all billing.  It looked like I was getting double billed.  Having bills how up in the thousands is a heart attack!  Even though its one procedure it is still the timing that goes into it.  It takes twice as long to do all the checks so yes they are billing you correctly.

  • OB confirmed just 1 delivery charge. At least that's good news!

  • As the others said- yes. The bill is not for the procedure, it is for the reading & measurements of the ultrasound. It takes twice as long to do it for 2 fetuses as for one.

For delivery, it will only be one delivery but of course there are 2 babies in the nursery/NICU/etc so they both have charges as individuals.

While we didn't have this problem exactly, they kept messing up the girls' bills.  Especially with our NICU stay.  All I can tell you is check and double check your bills after they are born!
