Tell me about your IUD

I haven't done too much research and don't know much about them. DH was going to get a vasectomy after we had B but now every time I bring it up he changes the subject. :/
We have done NFP for the past 7 years and I am actually getting tired of it and feeling like I am the only one protecting or planning. The reason I started NFP was because before then I was on the pill and on the patch and the hormones were making me a raving lunatic so I want to stay away from that.
From what I've read there are two kinds of IUD one is mirena which is hormonal and the other is copper.
Can anyone tell me their experiences with one or the other?

  • I'll be talking with my OB about an IUD at my 6 week appointment too. There are so many different stories that I've heard for each one that it's hard to choose. I guess it boils down to each person is different.

  • I have had a mirena iud twice and will be getting my third one tomorrow. I had no problems with mine. Each time I bled a little after insertion and then had little to no period. Had no cramping or anything
  • I was planning on getting an IUD, however, after reading about them, I have found out that they don't necessarily prevent you from "getting pregnant," but just from the fertilized egg implanting in the uterus.  This bothers me.

I've decided to go back on the pill short term, and DH will be getting a vasectomy in the near future.

  • I had a horrible experience and hormones don't usually affect me. I was irritable, anxious, gained 10 lbs in 8 weeks without my eating habits changing, had a headache a lot, trouble sleeping. I felt like I couldn't make a decision to save my life, I felt....frantic I guess. I got it taken out and within 4 weeks felt like my old self. I also bled for 7 weeks off and on with it in. It sucked. It did however help lighten my period which was awesome but I just couldn't deal with it, I felt like I was going crazy and everyone related it to PPD because I had just had a baby a few months before. After getting it out I am certain that it was the Mirena. Hubby will be going for the operation lol.

......the pill does the same thing.

  • I had the Mirena put in 3 weeks ago. Chose that  for a variety of reasons among which1) the copper one can actually make periods heavier 2) the amount of hormonal bc in the mirena is actually less than the pill.

I got my period a week after getting it put in. Much lighter than before (a pantyliner will last me most of the day), but I am now on day 17 of it.  I also had HORRIBLE cramping for 24 hours after getting it put in. And I can't feel it, so I'm paranoid it's actually moved or fallen out, so my husband is getting no sex until my check up in a couple weeks.

All non-barrier birth control does the same thing.  Consider a diaphragm with spermicide if you want to get away from condoms.
