STMs: Delivery room music playlists

STMs, did you find it more helpful to have an upbeat/energetic or chillout/relaxing music playlist for during delivery? It's fun to be in the homestretch and working on little details like these :)

Re: STMs: Delivery room music playlists

  • I didn't have a playlist and the thought honestly never occurred to me.

Honestly, I think music would have pissed me off. Towards the end, I guess during transition, someone turned on their iPod and I just remember being livid about it. I didn't want to hear it. To each their own though!

I SO agree with all of this.

  • I agree with PP. It never occurred to me and I don't think I would have cared for it.

I pushed for 1/2 hour with baby 1, 5 minutes for baby 2 and 16 minutes for baby 3. I was concentrating on getting the baby out and couldn't even tell you what was happening during that time.

  • I didn't have music and wouldn't have wanted music with my first two. Won't have it with this LO either.
  • I guess I'm in the minority because I will have music in the delivery room. I did not with my first or second but not because it would have annoyed me. I was pretty easy going in during labour and delivery.

I will bring a bunch of music I find relaxing and that really calms me, makes me feel good. (most of it is instrumental) I would rather have it and have the option of turning it off if I need to.

  • I think it all depends on your personality. For the previous posters, it didn't work for them. I, personally, am a HUGE music person, and with my first I had an awesome playlist going (even all the nurses commented on how much they liked it), featuring a combination of classical music and regular music that was really chill (Norah Jones, Sting, Sarah McLachalan, etc....basically mellow stuff). So I will be doing the same for this one. :-)
  • I brought some relaxing CD's for my 1st baby's birth, but honestly did NOT want to listen to it. I did, however, like "watching" movies on DH's laptop during early labor. It took my mind off the contractions, although I wasn't really following the movie. I def came to a point though where the movie was no longer distracting, but annoying so I had DH turn it off.
  • I didn't have any music, either delivery.  I don't think any kind of music would have helped me.

Heck, with my second delivery, I wound up in a room without windows, and I liked that even better than having had a room with windows.  I didn't like the distractions, and I preferred the low lighting.

This- I practiced relaxing techniques leading up to labor with both kids and used music as a big way to help me relax. Since I used the same music while I practiced relaxing and falling asleep it was like my body naturally started to relax as soon as heard those same songs. I have used the same playlist for both kids and I like it as something to distract me in between contractions and to keep a calm attitude/vibe in the room. Plus those songs give me sweet memories every time I hear them and it instantly takes me back to those special memories of laboring my children. FWIW I had unmedicated labors both times and it really helped. My playlist has classical (mostly piano classical) and relaxing stuff like Norah Jones, David Grey, Damien Rice, DMB, some christian praise & worship music that I like, and a few kids nursery/lullabye songs by Renee & Jeremy. I also listened to those same lullabye songs a lot while I was pregnant to fall asleep and to this day that music calms my kids down and puts them to sleep :-)

I agree with this, too. I remember yelling at my Mom about her ringtone.

  • My adrenaline was so pumped, I couldn't just listen to music. We had the tv on for a distraction, and I brought a laptop. This time will bring baby book to write in and iPad. GL!

  • I had a playlist for labor but once I hit transition, the playlist was the last thing from my mind. It was great to have before then, though!

I had a combination of upbeat songs, worship songs and relaxing/mellow music.

  • I started with Bob Marley and then switched to Celtic harp & fiddle after awhile.  For me, it was relaxing and gave me something else to concentrate on, but it's not for everybody.  The nurses did say that they enjoyed coming in to my room because it was so relaxing when the harp & fiddle was playing.

  • If there was music on at all while I was in labor I sure never noticed!

  • I had an epi, so maybe I'd have a different mindset if I were attempting to go natural, but once I got the epi, it was highly encouraged that I try to sleep/rest.  For me, I just needed lights out and as little sound as possible to get comfortable.  I'm a music teacher, so music is an important part of my life, but at that time, I just needed to get some sleep before pushing.  Once I was pushing, I was 100% concentrated on that.
