International Bumpies

Jet lag international flights

Hey it's my first question, I will be relocating from Canada to china with my nearly three month old daughter. I am wondering if there is any steps I can take towards getting her adjusted to hew soon to be new time zone. Also any tips while flying will be very helpful.

Re: Jet lag international flights

  • We relocated from Seattle to London last fall when DS was 4 months. Getting adjusted was actually pretty easy, since we were BFing and still on pretty much a 3-hour feeding/sleeping cycle. He was only just starting to sleep for 5-6 hour stretches at the time. Just the usual: be active during the day and keep things at night quiet and boring. I think it only took a couple of days for us to adjust.

You have probably already heard to nurse/feed during takeoff and landing. I think there is a post below about requesting a bassinet. We scheduled our flight to be a redeye so once we settled in and were in the air, DS was able to sleep for most of the flight, and so could we.

    Good luck!

  • Honestly, at 3 months I wouldn't worry too much about it. About the only thing you could do would be to gradually move her bedtime back, but it's probably going to be just as easy to just grit your teeth and bear it for the first week. That's how long it takes DD to adjust to the time when we fly to the States (7 hours difference).

As for flying with a 3-month-old, no problem. :-) Have her in a carrier for the airport and most of the flight (she can't be in it on take-off and landing), and make sure to reserve a bassinet so you can lay her down for at least part of the flight. I flew with DD when she was 8 months old by myself, and it was 5 million times easier than when DH and I flew together with her when she was 12 months and 17 months old and mobile.

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP
    BFP2: 3/18/12, blighted ovum, natural m/c @ 7w4d
BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

  • We moved from the States to Europe this past summer and my best advice is to try to sleep on the flight if it is at night.  Both of my boys have always been sleepers while flying due the white noise and the monotony of long distance flights even at young ages. Of course, on our transcontinental flight, DS2 decided to party all night long while DH slept with DS1.

Once you get there try not to sleep during the day whatever time that may be for you back where you came from.  It's a gradual acclimation so make sure to give yourself some wiggle room before you have any major obligations once you arrive.  It took our family at least 2 weeks to get on a somewhat normal schedule.
