I know this is an unusual problem, but I'm worried about how much weight my preemie is gaining.
Jonas and his twin Calder were born at 34.1, weighing 5 12 - a good weight to be sure. The babies were both on a combination of neosure and breastmilk and were gaining at a great pace. In December, we were allowed to move off Neosure and moved to Alimentium.
However, that was when I began to become concerned. Both babies were a similar weight with each other, but then Jonas began to drastically outpace his brother. Calder now weighs fourteen pounds, and Jonas nearly eighteen. He is so heavy! He is falling behind on gross motor compared to his brother and can no longer roll over, even though he could earlier. Both babies have reflux and I'm worried that Jonas is comfort sucking to deal with the pain. We have them both on prilosec, but are struggling to get good control for the little guys.
My pedi seems thrilled with the weight gain, but I just feel something is a little off. Anyone have any thoughts to share?
Re: Preemie Gaining Too Much Weight?
As Curling said, if your pedi isn't concerned, then it's probably nothing to worry about! If the boys seem happy and healthy, then you're doing a good job.
I am a little jealous as we have the opposite problem! My guy is 9 weeks adj. and is just over 9lbs. He has reflux and is on Prevacid. I've been very frustrated at his slow weight gain, but he's generally healthy. He's just going to be little for awhile.

I share your concern as well, More so a few months ago than now. My preemies were born at 26 weeks, so their weight gain was much slower to start, but at an adjusted 8 mo old my son is 23.5 lbs and my daughter 18.5. We have been on a breastmilk neosure combo since home from the nicu. From sept to jan he went from 2% on the growth chart for actual age to 60%. He's huge. Like your son, he has reflux and did fall behind on gross motor, unlike his lighter sister who crawled before he even rolled from back to belly. We get PT and he was still on the low end of normal when he started to roll at 7 mo. Our ped his happy w his weight, we actually are still on neosure. I was really worried about him getting heavy, but he is just a big boy. But it has taken him longer for gross motor bc of it, and I along w PT fully expect him to continue to be slower to crawl and walk bc of it.
