Family feeding babies?

Hi ladies
Bumping from phone so apologies in advance if I make tons of spelling errors. N and S are 5 weeks old and are doing amazing they are each up almost 3 lbs from their birth weights and the pedi is very happy.

Here's the thing: when we have visitors all family and they're holding the babies, everything is good. When it comes to bottletime, they usually would like to feed them. Normally I don't mind. I think the babies should get used to others feeding them since I am planning on going back to work.

However I notice that it takes others namely SIL, MIL and FIL a reallllllly long time to get them to finish the bottles. Like an hour! Dh and I are efficient feeders. I try and sit with them and offer suggestions. However they treat feeding time like playtime a little. They pull the bottle out a ton and burp them a crapload of times im all for good burps but it's like one burp every 20ml. And overall it just takes them forever. I don't want to seem like I'm being overbearing or micromanaging. I appreciate the help, but by the time they're done we only have like 45 minutes til the next feed. Amy suggestions here? I'm wondering if I should just take them for feedings and then give them back after....
Dh and I have a good system going, so it's just frustrating to watch others feed them even while I try and help and its not the way I/we do it.

  • Sorry meant to add also that they distract them a lot from their feedings.

  • I had the same issue with MIL and SIL with DS. He was so easily distracted and would often give up and not finish eating. I was not ok with that, so I explained to them (repeatedly since they didn't quite catch on at first) that it was very important that he finish his feedings and that the less they distracted him while he was eating, the better. Try to explain that efficient feedings = more time to play. They will probably respond to that.

  • I honestly dont see the point in others feeding them. Its nice that they want to help but, if you and YH have a groove going on Id stick to that and have others watch.

  • Can you blame it on the pediatrician? Say they want the bottle finished in 20min and that it needs to done a certain way. Sorry you are dealing with trying to correct well-meaning helpers.

  • We were on a three hour schedule from day one & didn't have family around, when my mom came to visit she knew how we did things & tried her best to stick to the schedule we had, if she was distracting them too much I gently reminded her of the task at hand.  Now the IL's were another story, I didn't let them feed as they just didn't listen to what we were trying to do so DH & I did all the feedings & let them hold babies after that.  GL!

  • I'd just do the feedings personally and hand them back to your visitors once they're done eating. I think it's a lot easier and less fraught with potential for offending people than offering suggestions or micromanaging them when they're feeding the LOs.
