Natural Birth

Hello world! (intro)

I guess it's the newbie intro day so I will join in.

I have been a lurker for a while now. We live in the Midwest, both in early 30s, and are going to start trying in the next couple of months (I know I am sort of jumping ahead and my mom already called me ridiculous for even trying to talk about baby stuff now). I already know that I would like to have as intervention and med-free birth as I can manage and I think my OB will support me in this. She even suggested I hire a doula.

I am not afraid of labor as such but, to tell the truth, I am terrified of pushing the kid out. I have very dry skin and have a hard time with healing any cracks. I am terrified of tearing.

I am also afraid that since I inherited the majority if my grandmothers's (paternal) bone structure, the labor will be long and difficult (I am 5'2 and have a pretty narrow pelvis). She was in labor for 48 hours. My mom, on the other hand, had three unmedicated deliveries and all three labors were under 6 hours. I hope that this is all old wives tales.

So there you have it. Sorry it's so long!

Re: Hello world! (intro)

  • Hello and Welcome!

I just wanted to address your concern about tearing.  Perhaps mention this to your OB and doula when you find one as perhaps there may be some remedies out there to help you since you have some skin issues.  Although it's quite possible that since the skin down there is different it may heal differently.  But more importantly, keep in mind you may not tear at all!  And for what it's worth, I had a second degree tear with each of my births and I can honestly say I was not aware of it as it was happening.  I didn't think recovery was all that bad either.

Lastly, please keep in mind that every birth is different, and just because something did or did not happen to your mom and grandma does not mean it will or won't happen to you.  The fears are normal and understandable, but try not to dwell on them and psych yourself out.

    Good Luck to you!
