switching brands of formula

When we started on formula 2 weeks ago our dr gave us enfamil newborn to try. If I want to switch brands is there anything I need to know before hand? Should I ask my dr.? Dh suggested we mix the old with the new to get her used to it... I wasn't sure if this was a good idea or not.

  • We just switched brands. Honestly it depends on what it is. We started on Gerber Goodstart. I started getting coupons for Enfamil so we decided to switch to save money. The closest thing to what he was on was Enfamil Gentlease. What are you trying to switch to and why? I try not to rock the boat too much with formula. It can cause issues.

  • We are thinking about switching from enfamil to parents choice. The only reason which I feel bad about is cost. We saw the price difference today and wondered about it.

With generics they are typically not a big deal. Though from what I've heard Target's generic is closer to Enfamil.

We use Parent Choice which is the generic that is closest to Enfamil.  Target's brand is closer to Similac.   Hope this helps!

Actually Up & Up Advance and Sensitive are Similac, Premium and Gentle Up & Up is Enfamil.

  • When we had to switch my son's formula, our pedi recommended NOT mixing formulas because then you don't know if the new stuff is actually working well or not.

FWIW, we tried the Target brand of Similac Sensitive and ended up switching back to the brand stuff because the Target version didn't keep him nearly as full.  The formula metabolized so quickly and made his stools really solid.

  • With DD1 we had to switch formula.  The Dr told us that it's not a big deal to switch, but not to keep switching back and forth.

  • I actually just wrote about this in my blog.

We were told not to mix.  We switched from Enfamil Newborn to Enfamil Gentlease.  So far so good.

I don't think it would hurt to contact your doc either and get his or her opinion.
