High-Risk Pregnancy

Type 1 Diabetics check in!

I know I've seen a few other Type 1's on here, how are you all doing?

I'm 11w4d and doing okay. Beyond exhausted all of the time, occasionally nauseous. But, the best thing is that my sugars have been great. I download my numbers and my doc looks at them every week, and things are great. Had an appointment Friday and my A1c was 5.9! I have never been able to get under 6.0 before so I am so happy with that.

Re: Type 1 Diabetics check in!

  • Glad your numbers are currently good.  Prepare for them to go to #$(#, though.  I had pretty good numbers before getting pregnant.  Now, at week 31, I am taking 3x more insulin that I was before.  With my insurance I have to pay 50 bucks each time I refill which is ridiculous.  I am on novolog and levemir.  They tried switching my levemir to NPH but I didn't respond very well to that at all. At least my last A1c was decent at 6.1 and LO is so far falling into the normal range growth-wise so we're doing something right.

Because of the D and my age my OB is more comfortable with a planned c-section.  She wants me on an insulin drip during the process.  Whatever gets us both through with the least risk is fine with me.

Something I am thankful for at this point is that I didn't listen to the asshat OB I saw after my first miscarriage a couple years ago.  He told me that with my health issues I had no business trying to have a baby and that I should just get my tubes tied.  Instead, I chose to listen to my Endo who told me diabetics have babies all the time.  So, here we are with the finish line getting closer by the second!  I am not only excited to see and hold my little girl, but also to get control of my own body back.  : )

Good luck and keep up the good work with your numbers.  I hope you can manage them well during your pregnancy.

  • Hi! How awesome of you to think of this. I alway filter through the GD post to try to find the Type 1 FTMs asking questions. Im doing okay. 27/28 weeks is when things start to go a little out of control for me so I am at that point now. I had a 5.8 A1C earlier in my pregnancy but that is long gone now for sure my last was 6.1 and we will see this week what it is now. Im also having resistance with pump sites on my butt however I am running out of room on my belly for inserting there (I am not a fan of putting it on my thigh) so that is getting frustrating. Other than the usual expected things all is good.

  • Hello ladies! It sounds like everyone is doing a great job! My A1c's have been between 6 and 6.5 the whole pregnancy. I wish they were a little lower, but I'm doing my best! I started weeklu NST's at 30 weeks and everything looks great! Monthly growth u/s started at 26 weeks and baby has been measuring a titch on the large side all along. I'm not so concerned about this because I was 21.5 inches when I was born and the long bone measurements factor into the estimated weight. All my docs are happy with things and it looks like I'll deliver at 38-39 weeks, hopefully naturally!!

  • Congratulations on your pregnancy! I, too, am on a pump and CGMS (I saw you are too in your signature) and I have to say they have been essential tools in keeping my BGs under control. I am able to see very quickly the moments my body becomes more insulin resistant and adjust my basal rates accordingly. I am now just over double my pre-pregnancy insulin usage (I am 31 weeks today) and expect it will continue to rise a little. The hardest thing for me was getting over the psychology of taking more insulin. I know it is best for the me/the baby, but pre-pregnant I was all about trying to keep my insulin levels at a minimum through diet/exercise, so it was hard, psychologically, to adjust to taking significantly more insulin. I start the 2x/week NSTs next week and am expected to be induced at 38 weeks, so there is an end in sight!

Best of luck to you in your continuing pregnancy!

ETA: I see you have a child in your pic, so clearly, this is not your first pregnancy--so you know the ups and downs to come. This is my first, so I am still learning. Sorry that my message is more geared toward "what to expect..."

  • I am currently 22 weeks and I am noticing a little trouble keeping my numbers down. My fasting numbers have been a little higher than we would like. Baby is measuring great and I have had little to no complications. I go tomorrow for an echocardiogram on the baby which my high risk doc told me is just a precaution that they do with all type 1 diabetic mothers.

Good luck to you. Keep up the good work and keep in close contact with your doctor.

  • I'm glad to see others on here! I too didn't feel like filtering through all the GD comments.
With my DS I was on almost double the basal rates from before and my carb coverage went from 1:10 to 1:5 by the end of my pregnancy. Things all went really smoothly with him so I'm optimistic things will go well again this time.
Good luck everybody, keep up the good work! Maybe I'll post a check in again next week!

  • Hi! I am 32 weeks tomorrow. Type one for 26 years. On a pump.  It's been a struggle for sure but all is well. I am now on 4x the insulin from before pregnancy and it still gets increased every other day. I talk to my nurse at least 2x a week and have high-risk appointments every 2weeks (bumping up to weekly after next appointment).

I am being successful at keeping my A1C at 7.0 but man it is fighting me! The tiniest changes throw everything of. I am using the infant settings on my pump and I am making basal changes of 0.05units an hour and that is the difference between being high or low - which is crazy! I test 15-20 times a day.

Baby is measuring big (4 weeks ahead) at biweekly ultrasounds but is looking 100% healthy.  Her daddy comes from a family of BIG babies (9lbs10oz-10lbs13oz) though so they now tell me it's not JUST my diabetes making her big.  She was breathing on her own in there a few weeks early which was really exciting, they called her an 'overachiever".

I still have this tiny fear she will be coming very soon as my husband was born at 34weeks at just under 7pounds (would have been close to 10 full term), breathing on his own and healthy as can be.  He then spent the rest of his life being well ahead of his peers at everything (a gifted overachiever). I have this feeling baby will take after her daddy and arrive soon.

I was put on quazi-bed rest yesterday because I was having contractions, I thought they were BH but turns out they were not. So now everytime I have a contraction I have to lie down for a full hour only getting up to pee.  Which basically means I lie down all day because everytime I try to walk I have one. So, the boredom begins!

  • Hello!

T1D for 10 years here, glad i found more of "me" in here :)

Will be 25w along tomorrow and tonight I'm flying to Mexicoooo, can't wait for a bit of rest, sunshine and swimming. Maybe I'll be lucky enough to bring my BG down. It's been all over the place since Christmas! However, the latest ultrasound showed a healthy baby girl and so far and growing within normal range... which is very lucky considering all the crap I'm eating.

Happy for you lattelady2 and your 5.9! Keep it up! Falling of the wagon sucks just hoping that things slow down enough for me so I can jump back in.

Nice to meet ya ladies, read ya when I get back. Woot!

  • Hi there! back from my trip and i didn't want to start a new thread just to do a little check in, tho I'm curious to read if other T1 pregnant ladies have been on a long trip as well and had any problems...

In summary: walking around was very painful, got out of breath really easily, my baby seem to love the sun (used spf 60 on the belly at all times), sunscreen makes your sites not stick properly (duh!), snorkeling is fun and relaxing, all you can eat buffets are horrible for your BS control, my insulin needs went WAY up ( I was in the 20's almost every night until I figured it out) and I got awesome belly shots on the beach (tho i did feel like a beached whale while posing)

Now i'm back home and checking constantly to see if I adjusted properly or if I'm going to go low since there is no pi?a colada's around but i still feel really tired, out of breath and this awful pain on my ribs won't go away unless I lie down for an hour or more :/
