cameras

Did anyone invest in a good camera?  Any recommendations?

We are Canon fans, and currently use a G4 Powershot, although *someone* spilled some wine into it when we were in Napa last year, and the lens is a bit sticky and no longer so sharp.  Definitely looking to upgrade, and definitely running out of time!

  • We invested in a Canon Rebel last year. It's awesome.

  • We just bought a Nikon d3200 and I love love love it!
  • I have a couple of Sony Alpha dSLRs that I absolutely love!!!

If you like Canons and want to stick with something similar to what you have, any of the newer Powershot models are fantastic compacts. The Canon EOS Rebels are nice if you're looking to get into dSLRs.

  • We have a Canon Rebel but the bad thing is that I can't keep the battery in it or it will drain, and switching lenses for the occassion and the fact that I use it on manual means that it's not the best for candid photos. I prefer to have it ready to use for special days or portraits that I can set up. I wanted a point and shoot for candids of the baby so we just invested in a Sony Cybershot. It was on sale for about 150 at Best Buy, and I'm loving it so far. It obviously doesn't have the versatility or the picture quality of my Rebel, but considering it's a point and shoot and any P&S under 300 bucks is considered cheap these days, I'm incredibly impressed with it.

Here's a photo of my rat that I took today. No flash, just using light from the window. Any other point and shoot that I've used would never get this quality and crispness with the lighting I used and the way the ratty is always moving.

If you have the cash to spend, I'd definitely go with a digital SLR like the Rebel, but if you're looking for something more budget friendly without all the gear, I highly recommend the Cybershot. Just remember when you're picking out point and shoot cameras that for the most part (unless you plan on printing out your images professionally in large sizes) having a higher optical zoom is going to be more important to quality than having a high megapixel count, and digital zoom is not the same as optical zoom. :)

So glad I saw this pic this morning not before bed last night!
