Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Insurance

Only I have insurance through my work.  Thankfully the hubs never gets sick, etc... I am a couple of weeks pregnant, when will I need to purchase insurance for my baby, AND can I get it cheaper ofline?  My Work health insurance is VERY EXPENSIVE, and not very good.  Any experience with this??

Re: Insurance

  • Individual health insurance policies will consider your pregnancy a pre-existing condition and refuse to cover it. This is why pretty much all individual policies will have a 365 day waiting period before they will cover anything maternity-related.

Group plans cannot discriminate that way, your best option is to use your work insurance.

Yes it was planned, yes we know what causes that, no we are not on public assistance, and yes we will be getting cable after this. ;)

  • and after the baby is born?  is there usually a grace period that the baby is on my insurance? or do I need to purchase an individual insurance for the baby

  • I'd have to go back and look, but I believe on my work plan the baby is covered on your insurance for the first 30 days.

After that they will need their own policy(or you'll need to get a family policy outside of work), you'll want to call around or check with an insurance agent about child-only health insurance plans if you want to go that way, they are out there.

  • If you want to add the baby when he or she is born and not wait until your open enrollment period, you'll need to add him or her within 30 days of birth, and it will operate to cover anything retroactive to his or her birthdate.

  • Your insurance should cover the baby for the first 30-31 days without having to add the baby, after that you will have  to add or find other insurance

You can't get insurance for the baby until they are born. I would work with an agent beforehand and have the quote and details all ready and then just call when the baby is born too add them. There is a website for individual health insurance plans, if you google it you should find it.

This. Your baby won't be covered until he/she is born...then you typically have 30 days the baby is covered by your insurance.

If you're asking if you can get insurance to cover your pregnancy, new coverage would consider your pregnancy a pre-existing condition...so it's best to use your existing work insurance. But call and ask. It's all a bit different. GL!

Posts like this remind me how amazing my insurance is, I only had to pay $650 out of pocket...and then we use DH's unreimbursed medical to cover that!
