Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Babysitter

Curious how much I should pay the babysitter now that we have 2 kiddos. For just DS, I paid her $8/hour but it was just a few hours at a time so it wasn't too bad. We have 4 weddings coming up (yikes) so we will need her to watch both kids (DD will be 5-6 months and DS will have just turned 3). Between the driving, wedding, reception, etc. it will probably be like 7 hours. I thought of bumping it up to $10/hour but that seems like a lot of money to pay a teenager for one evening. What would be a fair amount to pay her?

Re: Babysitter

  • I got paid 10 an hour to babysit when I was in high school and that was 1995 through 1999. It is a lot, but I would pay 10 an hour for two kids.

  • It probably depends on your region.  People on here usually say $10/hr, but in a survey I saw here once, most household incomes were over $100,000/year, although many people said they checked that box but lived in expensive cities and were still not well-off.  When I baby-sat in high school, I made about $4/hr, but that was a long time ago.  If both kids will be asleep most of the time and you don't expect her to clean up, cook, etc., you might get away with less ($50 for the night?) than $10/hr, but probably not way less, and perhaps more depending on where you live.
  • I'd pay easily $10 an hour. Personally, I'd bump it up to $12, but that's just me. Remember, you're asking her to care for a infant, and a lot more goes in to that than it would with, say, a 3 or 4 year old. Also, I don't really feel like the sitters age should play in to how much she makes. She has experience, as you said she's watched DS before, and she's giving up her time. Not trying to be mean, just giving my opinion. :)

  • I would definitely be expecting to pay her about at minimum $10/hr.

  • I'd say $12 because you're asking her to care for two kids, and one is a newborn.

  • I made 5 per hour 15 years ago, with no infants, so at least 10 per hour sounds appropriate to me.

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies, and for whoever said they weren't trying to be ruse, you certainly weren't rude at all. I was looking for honest opinions and I appreciate all the advice.

I guess I was wondering if I should do more of a flat fee for the night since it's a long evening and the last 2 or 3 hours the kids would be asleep. She wouldn't cook or do baths, but she will have to give DD a bottle or two and serve DS his dinner. Plus, she always picks up after him.

Ok, thanks for the advice ladies! I will talk to her about it ahead of time and see what she has in mind before I make a final decision.
