help - bleeding, can i pump?

Today my 5 day old latched on and it was more painful than usual, so I broke her latch and she literally had a mouthful of blood - it ended up all over her face and my nipple. It looked like pure blood, no milk mixed in. I just started pumping last night to give my nipples a break, and I've seen a drop or two come out here or there, but nothing like when I breast fed today.

I've switched to exclusively pumping (no breast feeding) on the non-bleeding side, because I can't risk that breast going out of commission as well. So my question is, should I also try to pump the bleeding side? Or should I let it rest completely? Will it make the nipple worse if I pump? Obviously I can dump the milk if I get too much blood, but right now I'm just worried about healing.

Seeing an LC tomorrow, but in the meantime I really need help :(

Re: help - bleeding, can i pump?

  • I think everything on the breast pump is working fine. I actually tried pumping the bleeding side and didn't get any blood -- so it seems like pumping will be a good alternative until that side heals and we can see the LC. Not sure whats going on bc DD's latch is good, at least according to the nurses in the hospital. Praying that the LC will have some answers....I'll be so sad if I can't breastfeed :-/
