April 2011 Moms

Autism

Well my DS was officially diagnosed with a form of autism spectrum disorder today. His type has more to do with his language not developing then social skills though those are lacking as well just not as much.

At his 18 month appointment we thought he was just a late talker. Now my son has autism. The good news is the doctor expects him to be high functioning and of normal intelligence. That is wonderful! But I am still having a hard time accepting everything that has happened today.

My DS is currently asleep in my arms and I feel so lucky to be his mom. He is perfect in every way. I just wish life was going to be easier for him, that what seems natural for other toddlers was easier for him.

Thanks for letting me share!

Re: Autism

  • Sorry doesn't seem like the right thing to say.  I guess I'm sorry that his life (and yours) will be a little more challenging than others.

One of my best friends has 2 boys on the spectrum, both also high functioning.  I attribute their success because of her dedication.  And there is so much out there in therapies, diet, medications, and more and more information every day.

I can put you in touch with my friend if you'd like (we met on TB).  She is such an advocate for autism.

    Big hugs to you!

  • You did the right thing being proactive and getting him the help and support he needs, you're a wonderful mother! Kids with asd that get diagnosed this early really do very we'll, especially if the dr gave you a good prognosis of being high functioning.
I am on an autism diagnostic team at a big Childens hospital, i'm not sure if your Dr recommended it, but order the 100 day kit from autismspeaks.com, its a free kit for families with new diagnoses and helps you navigate the first there months or so after you get a diagnosis.
hang in there, and continue to be a wonderful advocate for your son! Keep all your hopes and dreams that you had for him!

  • (HUGS) that's a tough diagnosis to hear for sure. You'll be amazed every day at how he finds his own way of figuring things out, even if it isn't how the other kids do it.

Thank you everyone for the hugs.

And thank you for this suggestion Jen. I called their autism response team yesterday to request the kit but I haven't heard back.

  • My 4.5 yo DS was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was 19 months.  He is also high functioning.

I remember like it was yesterday when he was diagnosed.  I felt sad, scared, overwhelmed, and a million other things all at once...but it will get better.

It's great that you were proactive and that you got a diagnosis early.  With ASD early intervention is so important.  We started ABA therapy just after DS turned 2 and with in a few months he made huge gains in his development and behaviors. He's been in ABA for 2.5 years now and has also been in preschool since he was 3 and he is doing amazing.

I also recommend the 100 day kit on Autism Speaks.  You can download it on there website if you don't want to wait for them to send you a copy.

If you have any questions or just want to talk to some one that has been through this feel free to PM me.  Also the special needs board is really helpful.  There are a lot of moms over there with kids on the spectrum who have a lot of great advice/information.

  • What hard news to hear and process. Your son is so lucky to have you.  It is good that you got an early diagnosis, there are so many services that are available for him. Sending a big hug your way - you are strong.
