constipation

My 3 1/2 week old little boy has been grunting and scrunching up his legs since yesterday. He had 1 good bm yesterday afternoon and has been having streaks of bm in his diaper. I called his doctor this morning they said give him a warm bath to loosen the muscles and also try stimulating those muscles with a rectal thermometer, that scares me, I don't want to hurt him! She also said to cut dairy out of my diet, what can you eat if you can have anything dairy, fruits and veggies?? if so, how long have you cut dairy out of your diet for?? TIA

Re: constipation

  • You are being dramatic there are plenty of things you can eat that don't contain dairy that you can eat. You will have to cut out for about 2 weeks I believe before you see any improvement.

Regarding rectal stimulation: you can get a similar effect placing vaseline on your middle finger and gently pushing against babys anus and perinium. It sounds a little wacky but its worked for me in the past.

You didn't state if you bf or not but if you do baby doesn't always have daily bowel movements. What I found to be helpful with helping my son with gas/bm is just laying him across my lap face down or on his side. I had my son like that one day and he gave me the mother of all exploding diapers.

    Good luck

  • Try bicycle kicks with his legs.  It helps to get things moving.  Also try massaging his tummy in a clockwise motion.  I did it daily for my little girl a few weeks ago.  Also, my best friend used suppositories for her little one.  you can get the childrens kind and give him half.  I had to do this once when she was 7 weeks old but be ready for an explosion!
