Solid Help!

Hi Ladies, it's been a long time since I've posted, but I'm really struggling with solids and would love your advice. LO is 8 months and 2 weeks and up until 2 weeks ago, he was an awesome eater and loved his pures three times a day. Now, if he eats them twice, we're lucky.

I've tried puffs and he can't get them in his mouth and when I put them in, he makes a horrible face and usually spits them out. I tried small pieces of sweet potatoes and bananas and he just mashes them in his hand. I'm kind of at a loss and to make matters worse, daycare sent home a nastygram asking if there isn't some solids we could send because he's trying to take food from the other babies. Talk about making me feel like a bad momma. I swear, I've tried them.

Anyone been through this yet? Any tips? Sorry for the long post!

Re: Solid Help!

  • If James didn't like something, we tried it again a week later.  He hated the puffs at first and did the same thing with his face and spit them out.  He likes them now, but I have to give them to him, he still tries to squeeze them in his hand otherwise.  What food is he trying to get from the other babies?  Maybe try that since he shows interest.

  • Must be frustrating, I would be similarly upset by a note like that.  Its not quite so simple at this age as "sending some solids" and its seems like what works changes from day to day.  You said small pieces and also mention that he can't get the puffs in his mouth.  What about large pieces of soft food where we can chew off what he wants.  We do BLW so its a little different but my LO can't or won't get anything small to his mouth but hand him a huge sweet potato slice or toast with hummus or a veggie muffin and he really eats it and then keeps working the small crumbs too.  Can you find out what he's trying to steal?  Kidding . . . sort of . .

  • Good thoughts, ladies. He's trying to "steal" their puffs! Hah. I didn't consider trying bigger pieces I think that's what I'll try next. He isn't crawling yet and gags a little bit, so I've been cautious, but I think it's time to give it a go.

Any other food ideas welcome. I clearly have no idea what I'm doing. Going to buy him an iPhone now because he tries to steal that, too!!

    Thanks!
  • I also wanted to add that my DS does not like solids when I feed it to him at home but at daycare he will just about eat anything and gobbles it up! It's the strangest thing but its probably because he sees other babies eating. FWIW, DS loves puffs but can't feed it to himself yet. He gets super excited when he sees the puffs container.
  • I agree with the big pieces that pp mentioned.  James likes to suck on and gnaw on large apple slices.  I watch so that I can make sure he doesn't get a huge chunk, and he really enjoys it.

  • My little guy ate foods at daycare he wouldn't eat at home, so you might just send the stuff you've tried giving him that you know he's not allergic to.  Now he'll pretty much eat anything that we've tried (so far) for us or daycare, but at the beginning, I'd give him something, he wouldn't eat it, but I'd send the same thing to daycare the next day, and he'd eat it all.
