Mental Breakdown (about C-Section)

I am 38w 4day and have a scheduled c-section on Wednesday. The baby is breech and hasn't turned, therefore I will be having a c-section. My mom, dad and hubby will be there for support! But still I am TERRIFIED of having surgery. I love my life! I know I am dramatic but this is major surgery I don't want to die!!!! I have been trying to tell myself I will meet the baby that day and be positive but it only works half the time! Today I just broke down crying so hard. ...I think my dog thinks I am crazy. Anyone else feel a little insane about having surgery?? Wise words? Anything?

Re: Mental Breakdown (about C-Section)

  • I was actually speaking with my boss about this just today.  In the last 7 years alone (the time between his wife's first and second c-sections), it's gotten even easier and safer :)  I know it wasn't your choice, but if it's best for the baby, just go with it!  He was in the room for his wife's last one, and said it was incredibly QUICK, she didn't feel any pain, and she was awake throughout, fully lucid, just numb.  She was able to see her baby right afterward, and had a very quick recovery as well!

  • I thought I might die before my first C/S as well.  Even wrote a letter to the baby in case I did!  But, the reality was so quick, easy and painless.  The only hard part is the spinal shot -- the rest was cake.  Until the spinal wore off, then, yes, there was pain, but nothing unbearable.

I read somewhere that a c/s today is as safe and common as a tonsilectomy.  I am happily going into this second c/s on Monday.  :)

A little anxiety is normal.  Just don't let it get away from you.  For me, I just trust that everything is in God's hands and give my worries up to him.

  • Thank you for the reassurance! Yes I do try and give my worries and faith to God. That is the only way I stopped crying this afternoon...from praying :)  Good luck with your c-section on Monday!

This has been my experience!  I was super scared at first, but I only had a few minutes to think about it (instead of days) so that probably helped.  I just thought of the safety of my baby, and the next thing I knew, I was looking at him and listening to him cry.

That's awesome to hear!!  My first is coming within 20 days (induction at that time), and c-section has been a fear of mine, so I've been asking around.  I was quite relieved as well!

  • I vbac-ed this time, but I kept having a fear I was going to die, I did when I was pregnant with dd.  it is very normal to be scared.   It doesn't help you know when it is going to occur.  But like pp said, csections are really common and safe.
  • I think its normal to be so scared before any surgery. I had ankle reconstruction when dd was 8mo old. It was my second, and it was out patient MINOR surgery, and I was still afraid something would go wrong!

Sending good thoughts and prayers your way!!!!

  • Hi, I have a question  - why would you schedule a C-section on Wed. at 39w 2d?  If you are a first time Mom, healthy, no other issues and everything else is going well,...your baby still may move.  My child was breech until the last week and I thought I was on the same path.  I did lots of scrubbing the floor/Spinning Babies type of exercises...until I finally gave up and was scheduled for an external inversion.  Then, next appointment the baby flipped.  Statistics prove the majority of first-time mothers are at least one-week late.  I was first time Mom and delivered 8 days past due date.  So, in your case, you have almost 2 weeks before any major C-section type decisions have to be made, again, if everything else (amniotic fluid levels, blood pressure) is fine.  Did you doctor pressure you into this?

My placenta is not in an ideal position to do an external version. And my fluid levels have been creeping down each week. I have tried tons of thing to get my baby to flip already. And a c-section is my last resort!  My doctor is NOT pressuring me into this. I am the type of person that will research tell the end of the earth to find a better solution but there is not one. I am doing what is best for me and my baby.

  • Yes, you are doing what's best for your situation.  I've just seen so many anxious Moms ready to get their babies out when they aren't fully cooked.  But, in your case, I agree with you - a placenta issue and fluid levels are nothing to be casual about.  I had similar issue with declining fluid levels because I fell.  Dr. said, stay in bed, drink lots of water,...but it didn't help, fluid levels in all pockets kept declining to the point of bringing me in for an induction.  The induction failed for two days.  Low fluid levels get scary because of cord compression.  Wise choice. Good Luck!

Thank you! I agree with you on people wanting there baby out for "selfish" reasons. My sister keeps saying "your so lucky" I was 6 days late. However, I feel like she was the lucky one! Having a baby cook all the way and come when they are ready is a beautiful thing to me :)

  • Just to give you a positive story... I had my csection on Jan 29th and by Feb 3rd I felt very close to my old self. My section was quick and painless and I really didn't have any major pain following. I will say take the pain meds they give you as it will help and get up and moving as soon as they allow you to. I really think that was what made me feel so much better.

I also got to see both my boys as they came out and once they were swaddled and got to do skin to skin with them as soon as we were in recovery.

I think your fears are normal just try to focus on meeting your LO.

    Best of luck mama!
