OK to change the spelling of grandma's name?

I am considering using my grandma's first name, Yuvonne, as my baby's middle name.  The only problem is that I prefer the conventional spelling-- Yvonne or even the French version, Evonne.  Do you think it would be rude to change the spelling?

  • No I think it's OK to do.  Pretty name!

  • I think that's fine to do.  We used my FIL's MN for our DD's MN, but we changed it to a more traditionally feminine spelling.

  • I'd change it. Yuvonne makes my want to say "you Vaughn"

    Ditto.

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I would change it. It's still your grandmother's name, just spelled different for identity and confusion. I would liken it to buying a vintage dresser and then refinishing to make it useful for today's taste.

  • I would change the spelling and not feel bad about it.
  • I prefer the conventional spelling too, I say go for it grandma will understand!
  • I would totally change the spelling. The cycle stops with me. :)

BTW, I was just thinking about what a nice name Yvonne is the other day and wondering why I seldom see it mentioned here.

  • I have a similar situation.  DH's grandmother, who he was very close to, was named Bibian.  ick.  She was supposed to be Vivian, but apparently the Dr. didn't like the name and suggested Bibian (?).  Anyway I would love to honor her with using her name in the mn spot if we have a girl, but I would only consider Vivian.  DH thought it was a little weird that I wanted to change it, but I feel like it's still honoring her even if we're changing it a little bit.
  • I definitely think changing it is fine! You are still honoring her by using her name, even if you change the spelling. And I think Yvonne is much better than Yuvonne. You aren't insulting grandma or anything by spelling it differently! I don't see anything rude about it- you aren't obligated to name your kids after anyone anyways! =)

  • I am actually doing the same thing.  Our little girl's first name is my grandmother's name, and I changed the spelling from her "ie" ending, to the more proper "y".

Same name, and she didnt have a problem at all with the change.  She was just as excited as she would have been with her spelling.
