C-sections

Recovery following 2nd csec

Who has had an unplanned csection the first time and then a scheduled on the second time? I'm pregnant with my second baby and I'm debating on a VBAC. My son was born via csec after having been induced, dilating to 10cm and pushing for 2.5 hrs without any luck. My recovery wasn't too bad, but I'm wondering... I've heard that the recovery from a 2nd and more importantly planned csection is much easier. What are your experiences?

Re: Recovery following 2nd csec

  • I'm 2 weeks out from my 2nd c-section.  It was planned.  The first time my recovery wasn't bad.  This time has been just as easy if not easier.  The spinal wears off quicker than the epidural, so I started getting tingling and movement back while in recovery.  I stayed on the drugs till my check-up at 1 week, just to get me through getting my staples removed.

For me the only real difference was in the operating room.  It was much more surreal this time since I was aware of everything going on.  Everything from the first time is pretty much a blur.

  • My second c section went very well. I didn't have any trouble and overall it was a great experience as far as surgery goes. I've been more sore this time, most likely from not taking it easy enough ...I do also have a three year old.

  • I just had my second csection yesterday and yes it is easier because you know what to expect. But if you had a lot of scar tissues like me from the first one, you maybe in for a surprise. I had a lot of keloid scars so it took half hour just to get to the baby and another 1.5hrs to finish putting me back together. The anesthesia did not fully make me numb so I felt a lot of things I should never have to. Now I have staples with dressings over it. The tape that held the dressing together actually stripped a layer of my skin off thanks to the merciless PA . Not to mention a rash from a slight reaction to the anesthesia.

I hope no one else goes through anything remotely close to what I went through!! But...

In the end all that mattered was we got to meet our beautiful daughter.

  • Second time was definitely better for me.  Not only you do know what you're getting into, you don't have a painful labor to go through.  I'm going in for a third one, so it mustn't be that bad!  ; )

  • I had a c-section the first time because LO wouldn't drop 24 hours after induction was started. I'm having another c-section this time around for 1. All 5 of the Dr's in the practice say it's a very high probability that this baby won't drop and I'll wind up having another c-section anyways and 2. Because I got pregnant 7 months after my first, the chance (even though small) of uterine rupture is still there and it's safest for me to have another c-section.

Good luck on your decision! I know whatever you decide will end up being the right one for your family. :)

  • It was really easy. I had expected it to be like the first, but this was a walk in the park. I did make sure to take my pain meds this time though. Last time i didn't think I needed them ( I was wrong).

  • I had an unplanned csection the first time and am opting for a scheduled one this time.  With DD my water broke naturally at 39w 3d just before 2 am.  I labored well and went for the epi at around 10 am, dilated to 10cm and pushed for 5 hrs and DD just would not come out.  I started running a fever and DDs heart rate was dropping, so we did the c section after 18 hours of labor.  I was physically and mentally exhausted and so was DH. My recovery was great - BFd within 2 hrs of delivery and was moving around pretty quickly and didn't take pain meds once home other than the prescription ibuprofen.  I don't want to go through that experience again some are opting for the RCS this time.
