The great debate- Baby girl name

I posted several weeks back about my husband being STUCK on the name Verity, but me not being completely sure about it. I also really liked Charlotte, Sadie, and Brielle.

Well, we "tried them out" by exclusively using one of the names for a few days each when we referred to her or talked to her and now my DH has completely flip-flopped and LOVES Charlotte. I really like Charlotte, but I have a soft spot for Sadie too. I am a bit concerned about the trendy-ness that Charlotte may be gaining. Also- the mn is set as Elizabeth and is a cherished family name.

So, If it were you, would you pick:

Charlotte Elizabeth

or

Sadie Elizabeth

Thanks for the help!

  • Charlotte Elizabeth hands down! Such an elegant name. Love it.

  • Personally I prefer Charlotte Elizabeth the best. But that could also be due to a close friend having a dog named Sadie.

  • Now that I think about it, I think my original post about these names was on the Baby Names board! Oops. Maybe you can help me with the decision anyway? Sorry for the confusion. I am a mess.

  • I like Charlotte. It is popular, but it's also a classic. I also think it flows better with Elizabeth. Sadie, on the other hand, sounds sort of awkward with Elizabeth since they both end in an e sound. Also, for some reason I know a lot of dogs named Sadie!

This has happened so many times when I've asked about Sadie. I've never known a dog named Sadie, but I have been so surprised how common a pet name it is.

  • Another vote for Charlotte!  Such a classic and flexible name.
  • I think Sadie is cute for a child but I don't think it ages well.  Charlotte is beautiful!
  • I love both, but I really love Charlotte more! It's just such a beautiful name. I know someone who just had a baby and named her Mary Charlotte and I think it's one of the most beautiful names I've ever heard!

ETA: Sadie also looks like misspelled Sandie to me. I had to re-read your original post a couple of times to make sure that it wasn't supposed to say Sandie. It's still a beautiful name, but I've never heard of it, so maybe I just have to get used to saying it!

  • I love the name Charlotte, and Charlotte Elizabeth is a great name IMO.

I'm with the PPs who automatically think of Sadie as a dog's name.  I actually don't think I've known any women named Sadie so I guess I'm biased.

  • While I do know two dogs named Sadie, my great grandmother's name was Sadie and I think it's quite pretty. [And since she was an older woman most of her life, I don't think of it as too much of a "little girl" name.]

Unfortunately, the only Charlotte I've ever known was a really screwed up individual, so I'm definitely biased toward Sadie!

Associations aside, they are both beautiful names and I don't think you can go wrong with either of them! Good luck!

  • Charlotte Elizabeth is our top name right now.  I am still debating about the growing trendiness of Charlotte right now though.

This is me EXACTLY. I prefer Charlotte but only because I know someone with a dog named Sadie.

(...not that there's anything wrong with the name Sadie.)

  • I like Charlotte Elizabeth.  Charlotte is a classic, even if it is popular now.

  • Charlotte Elizabeth hands down.

I am jaded though probably because I am a veterinarian and know way too many Sadie dogs to name a kid that. Wink

  • Wow, it is pretty overwhelmingly support for Charlotte over Sadie. This really helps me with my choice, though. I'm feeling reassured about Charlotte and reminded why I didn't go with Sadie earlier on. We may be very close to making that final decision. I'll have to sit down and talk to my DH tonight.

Quick question- I'm not really much for using nick names. (I tend to address people by their full names) But, I'm just curious about what nn you like best for Charlotte? I've heard of Lottie, and Charley... do you have an opinion or another suggestion?

I like Charley/Charlie. Very cute nn for a little girl.

  • Charlotte was our girl name for the first, but since we ended up with a Charlie we aren't using it. I LOVE the name, it's so classic. Charlotte gets my vote!

  • I prefer Charlotte Elizabeth. I don't know any dogs named Sadie, but it just doesn't sit right with me. Sadie seems like it should be a nickname. Charlotte is getting very popular, but it is still beautiful.
  • Although Charlotte is a gorgeous, classic name, it is way too popular for my taste, so I'd go with Sadie.  If you do decide on Charlotte, I prefer the nn Lottie.

  • Oooo, I LOVE the name Charlotte!!! I don't think it is trendy enough to be an issue right now.

HAHA I had a dog name Charlotte growing up. I like Sadie better personally. I hate the way my husband says Charlotte too. He always says it with a wierd accent. I have no idea if it is from a movie or just something wierd he does.

  • Charlotte, love that name!
  • Sadie is super cute, but I always do the "resume test."  Look 25 years down the road when her name is spelled out on top of a resume.  Which is going to look like a professional woman you'd want to hire?  Charlotte will always look good and be ageless.  I also think about if they would they taken seriously if they were a doctor or lawyer and a client/patient had to choose them from their credentials/first impression/a list.

  • Love Charlotte and it flows beautifully with Elizabeth. Not a huge fan of Sadie- I think it is way more trendy/popular and because of the same sound at the end of the first name and beginning of the middle, it either melds together into one name or is just a mouthful if you try to pronounce both separately.
