Nursing wear?

I'm a FTM and have never purchased nursing wear before. I thought all the tops and bras would work the same way, but apparently there are pull downs and double side slings and clip downs, etc. I'm confused and don't want to spend a bunch of money on something that might not work well. What do I need? How many? What size? Any advice? I WAS a small shirt size 36 B before getting pregnant, now I'm a large 40 DD. I have no idea what will happen when my milk comes in.

Re: Nursing wear?

  • I prefer clip down nursing bras or camis under a regular shirt that you pull up.  Stay away from underwire at least in the beginning.  I bought two bras and two camis to start, but do have some old ones for back up if I need them.  And I would go with what would fit your size now, because you'll be that size or a little bigger for a while, but know you might have to get resized once you've established breast feeding, or lose weight.

  • Personally, I wouldn't bother with nursing shirts. I would just get tanks and bras. I prefer the kind that clip up/down at the strap. And I wouldn't stock up. Make sure you are getting the right sizes, you like the fit, etc. first.
  • At my breastfeeding class the instructor said to hold off from buying nursing bras for a month because the size of your breasts will change. Since my "to bring to the hospital" list had indicated that I will need a nursing bra I have already purchased one but will hold off buying more until I know what size I'll be. Oh, also she said to avoid the ones with wire...

    This.  Nursing shirts are awkward.
