February 2013 Moms

Overreacting??

Hi all! I'm a lurker but need your opinions. I'm currently stuck in the house because of the blizzard in the northeast. I literally cannot get my door open and the governor has closed the roads. I am 37w2d and am panicked that's water could break when it is near impossible for me to get to the hospital. My hospital is 45 min away on a normal day. My family and friends think I'm overreacting as I'm not due for a few weeks. But my water with DS broke at 38w1d so I don't think I'm that crazy! So Feb moms....insane or legitimate concern???

Re: Overreacting??

  • Yes it's a legitimate concern. But, if you go into labor you would call an ambulance and somebody will get you to the hospital. Try to stay calm because panicking about the "what ifs" here won't help you. The chances of this happening are slim and part of why they're keeping everyone else in is so that emergency crews can do their job as far as clearing the roads and get to true emergencies safely and quickly.

  • I know it's difficult not to worry. If your water breaks, you still have plenty of time to get to the hospital. With DD1, my water broke and 12 hrs later I still didn't have a single contraction. It is a legitimate concern if you have been have them. Don't forget, just because this is your 2nd pregnancy, it doesn't mean you will have your LO earlier than your first. I had DD1 on her EDD and here I am almost at wk 39 and still no signs of eminent labor. Relax, watch a movie with a snack and stay warm. My NST drive in the snow that should have taken 50 min took me 2 hrs yesterday. If I had gone into labor, I would have had a police escort or called for an ambulance (first labor was only 1 hr!)

  • I understand your concern and I think I would be a bit nervous too, but I think the other ladies are right. Chances are, you'll not go into labor today, and if you did, emergency crews would be able to get you to a hospital. Just try to relax because there's nothing you can really do about it one way or the other right now.

Congrats to both my TTC buddies, Amberley18 and sb2006 on their beautiful babies!
  • Thanks ladies! I know it's unlikely but I can't help but worry. I'll also be attempting a VBAC so my mind is going to all the "what ifs!"

Ill be on the couch today relaxing!!

I'm right there with you! I posted the other day my same concern. I'm 38 w 1 d with twins and my csection is Tuesday. Luckily no contractions last night and if necessary we can find a way out today. Most likely an ambulance though since our cars are under a 4 foot snow drift. I'm also 45 minutes from the hospital... Couch time while SO shovels! Gotta love New England ughhh so over winter
  • I hear you. I am in southeastern massachusetts and we havent had power in 24 hrs. I am 41 weeks and the doctor expected my baby to arrive this weekend. I figure we can make it to the hospital in time, i just dont know how to deal with the projected days of power loss. Its cold. Plus we have well water so no electricity means no water at all and no toilet. :
