What's your diaper changing routine entail?...particularly for diaper rash prevention/remedy.
Per pedi recommendations, I have not been using anything for a wet diaper (no wipes, no nothing) and only wipes for a poop diaper. If there was any redness, I was using a zinc oxide spray. Pedi said the least amount of product the better.
Lately, DS is pretty red where the skin folds in his legs rub together and/or where diaper rubs that same area, as well as red along the side of his testicles where I'm assuming the diaper must be rubbing. The area is red and shiny looking (kinda like a burn) and there's an area on his testicles where the skin is peeling. So, now, I'm thinking blot warm wet cloth to area after pee diapers and blot dry. Wipe with poop diapers still. And let the area dry out for a bit before applying ointment and putting diaper on.
Any other recs? Favorite diaper rash cream?
Re: talk to me about your diaper changing routine
When DS had his rash, we rinsed off the wipes so there was no cleaner, it was just a wet wipe. We air dried his butt, then used the purple desitin on his butt. Cleared him up within 2 days.
I think your plan sounds good. The important thing is to protect his skin from further damage and the desitin will do that.
You've heard what I've done, not what I've been through.
If you were in my shoes, you'd fall the first step."
We used disposables for the first two weeks of my daughters life. She instantly had red skin, rash, and was very uncomfortable. Desitin worked ok. At 3 weeks we switched to Fuzzibunz cloth diapers, and all those issues went away instantly.
I use wipes for when she has a poopy diaper, and I just gently wipe her off with a cloth wipe if she just has a wet diaper. After I switched her to cloth, in the few days it took for the redness and rash to go away, I just rubbed expressed breast milk on her, and let it dry before I put the diaper on. Worked great!
We change diapers every two hours, unless it needs changed before then of course, to avoid rashes. But it's good to use a wipe even for wet diapers, both my girls get red butts if I don't use wet wipes every diaper change.
Letting it air out is great, and also athlete's foot cream works wonders on rashes, Lotrimin AF. Our pedi recommended it for our FB when she would get rashes, and it healed it up quickly. FB also got rashes quite frequently, so our pedi had prescribed Clotrimazole and Betamethasone cream, it's a combination cream that heals it faster than anything I have ever used, and it lasts FOREVER because you use so little, we still have some left over for our new baby just in case.
Earth Mama Angel Baby bottom balm is AMAZING!! I put it on my LOs bottom whenever it starts looking red and at the next diaper change the redness is gone! A little bit goes a long way and I have even used it to clear up some other skin issues. You have to buy it online but you won't be sorry - awesome stuff!!
Thankfully my LO hasn't had any issues with rashes, and all I really do to protect her bottom is apply some Grandma El's before bed. I also have Earth Mama Angel Baby butt balm and coconut oil but have not really had to use either.
Kiddos I've taken care of at work have had severe diaper rashes though and per the recommendations of our wound care nurses, we use water on a soft cloth and pat the bottom and use as little friction as needed to clean the poop (no need to do anything for pee). We apply Calazime ointment (which is zinc based) as needed, but be sure to only completely clean it off once a day as the rubbing and friction needed to completely remove it may damage the skin further, of course, if it comes off with the poop, that's different. Also, let the area be open to air as much as possible, which is decidedly more different for active, mobile babies at home than it is for my sick babies at the hospital.
