Is anyone here taking aldactone (spironalactone) and metformin? If so, have you had any side-effects from taking both together? I know there is a moderate interaction warning with this, which my doctor never advised me of.
The reason I ask: Since starting metformin I have been experiencing light-headedness, pressure in the head, and a fullness in the ears.
I know that no one here is a doctor, but I thought I would at least see if this is a common occurrence or if I should be concerned at all.
Thanks all!!
Re: Aldactone & Metformin
Hopefully, I am not giving you a bunch of info that you already know.... but here's my best guess as to what is going on.
Aldactone is a diuretic, it works within your kidney. Many people refer to it as a "water pill" because it causes you to excrete more water into your urine. The symptoms that you are having are likely related to the Aldactone which can cause you to have lightheadedness and headaches from intravascular depletion (aka dehydration) because the pill forces your kidneys to get rid of more water. Often people will notice the symptoms are more pronounced when they stand up or change positions rapidly which can cause you blood pressure to drop if you are dehydrated from the medication. I guess, it is possible that starting the metformin has increased the effects you are feeling from the Aldactone since they they both have some effect on the kidneys.
The two pills do not technically interact with one another. The aldactone works on your kidneys and metformin can also effect the kidneys because of how it is metabolized. In most young people these two drugs can be taken together safely. You would want to avoid taking other things (like aleve or motrin) that also are processed through the kidneys, because you can get elevation in your kidney numbers and possibly kidney failure if you take too many medications that all effect your kidneys. Metformin and aldactone are usually safe together in an otherwise healthy person.
I would suggest trying to increase your water intake and see if it helps your symptoms. If you continue to feel lightheaded, esp when changing positions your MD may need to decrease the dose of your aldactone.
Hope that helps, I tried not to oversimplify too much. I will try and answer any other questions if you have any.

Thank you very much! I didn't even think of the diuretic issue! I have been on aldactone for many years, so if anything, it would be the metformin causing the issue.
Actually, I took a decongestant last night and feel better...apparently I have some allergies that I didn't know I had. No real congestion symptoms, but that must be what it is. We shall see how I do today!
