Toddlers: 24 Months+

2.5 not sleeping well

My 2.5 year old son is having horrible sleep issues. He fights sleep horribly and is an over tired little man. Any tricks to helping relax h before bed? Also, how much sleep does your toddler get/need?

DS1 is almost 5 and is a great sleeper. My baby is trying to kill me with his lack of sleep!

Re: 2.5 not sleeping well

  • My LO is 2.5 as well and we have a very set routine. Her bedtime is 8, so at 7 she gets a bath, then we get on jammies, and read a story. Once we do that I get her in her bed. Now, she has nights where she gets out of bed OVER and OVER, or gets up in the middle of the night and wants to play. But we don't really acknowledge it, we just walk her back to bed. There is a lot of tears involved, but eventually she goes back to sleep. She goes to bed at 8 and gets up at 5, every day, like clock work.

Does he fight going to bed, or does he just get up a lot during the night?

He does both. Sometimes he fights going to bed or he just tosses and turns and can't fall asleep for a very long time. He use to sleep all night in his toddler bed and since Christmas he wakes up in night wanting me and he also wakes up early and needs a drink. He drinks an entire Sippy cup and falls back to sleep for a bit. He also has been wakes up crying in his sleep a lot. My older son had night terrors around this age so I'm not sure of this is what he's doing as well. He naps some days but others he doesn't. His schedule is just completely off! Every day is different.

Tonight he was over tired because he didn't nap and I rocked him to sleep walking him around. I am sending ds1 to my parents this weekend so I can try to get him back on a schedule. Dh works an insane amount so I'm on my own for 56 nights of the week.
  • My guy is just over 2 and has had trouble sleeping since 20 months.  I feel like I've tried everything I am supposed to try.  He was a perfectly sleep trained baby!!  Our house is up at 5:30 for work......so I gave up on the middle of the night battles.  He gets into our bed.  I am planning to address this when he is 2.5 and I am on summer break from teaching.  Maybe this is all just a phase :)
