WWYD?

So, L is on his new diet. We did well today, no gluten or food dyes all day.

Tomorrow is grandparents day at preschool. They're going to have muffins, bagels, or donuts. Would you pack a sweet treat that's GF and hope for the best? Bribe him with a treat that he'll get when we pick him up? Or just let this one slide?

I'm struggling with being "that mom" who is super anal about snacks and making him stay on his new dietary restrictions.

  • I think it is fine every now and then but you need to decide what's more important.

  • Putting my foot down is not one of my strong points.

I think I'm going to pack his snack and hope for the best. I bought GF scones and can make it super appealing to him with butter and honey. My dad will be with him and he's kind of clueless with the GF diet.

My inlaws are going with my neice who goes to the same school. They're clearly clueless on GF.

  • I swear I'm not being an @sshole just because I'm down in the dumps, but I'm assuming your doing this dietary change to make an impact in his behavior?

From what I understand, this is a 100% adherence kind of thing.

Just me...  I'd send him with a snack.  I'd also let the teacher and the grandparents know that nothing made of wheat or anything of a bread nature is suitable.  That way you've got the teacher in on your side as well.

No, you're not. This is exactly the problem. I feel super dedicated, but surrounded by people who aren't on board. Except DH and my older sister they're 100 with me.

I'm for sure packing the snack. It will be loaded with honey, but that's ok. I'm going to pack a note with it that says we're on a strict diet, and this is what he's eating, friends, family and teachers are to treat it as it is an allergy.

  • I think your idea of sending snacks with him sounds good. I also like JnK's suggestion of getting his teacher on your side. I just would try not to get too upset if someone does end up feeding him something that's not part of his diet.

  • I think you're doing the right thing by sending the snack.  I don't know about the dye part, but Betty Crocker icing is GF, not sure if that might make a scone look more like a cupcake?

Definitely try and get his teacher on your side and work on the grandparents.  The allergy thing could work too.  My nephew has Celiacs Disease and while eating gluten is not life threatening it gives him such a bad belly.  Most people understand/respect allergies a whole lot more than they do food sensitivities.  Stick to your guns, inform those who will be around L and good luck!

  • Thanks for the advise everyone.

He's been throwing up since 2 am, so I'm not sending him anymore. He's going to be sad when he hears his day with grandpa is not happening.
