Multiples

head shapes

During my past few ultrasound visits, my dr. has alerted me to the fact that my twin boys both have somewhat unusual head shapes. I don't think it's anything hugely dramatic, but it is definitely noticeable on ultrasound. One is a bit oblong rather than round, and the other has these indentation kind of things near the forehead area. The dr. doesn't seem to have a clear explanation of why...possibly closed sutures, but more likely the result of being "squished" in the womb. That is my going theory so far, because they have both been head down and squeezed really low into my pelvis for the past few months. There are no observable brain abnormalities or extra pressure, etc.

I haven't been given much direction on what to expect, beyond "it is what it is" and "there's nothing you can do about it anyway." I've resigned myself to the fact that I will just have to wait and see once they're born, and I assume they will continue to be examined over the first few months after birth to determine how problematic their head shapes are, if at all. Maybe it won't even really be noticeable, maybe it can be corrected with helmets, or maybe it will require surgery.

I've probably just freaked myself out more by looking stuff up on the internet, but it seems like this is a more common issue than I anticipated, especially in multiples. I'm curious if others have experience with this and what has the outcome been like? I was glad to see the "helmet moms" post recently...good timing!

I will love my little boys to pieces no matter what, and I am blessed if this is the worst of the issues I have to worry about, but I just hope to avoid functional problems or having them grow up being teased. Maybe I am making a bigger issue of this than I need to? I just don't have anyone to talk to about this. Thanks for listening ladies!

Re: head shapes

  • I have 8 month old twin boys. One was breech and had his head stuck up near my liver. He definitely had a cone head when he came out, but it did not last long. They both have beautiful round heads now, so don't worry too much!

  • Head shapes can change a LOT after birth. It's impossible not to worry but please know that if shape is the only issue it's most likely correctable with positioning after birth. After birth if they appear to keep their head to one side more than the other get a PT evaluation very early as that's something easily corrected if caught early.

  • My twin B had a really oblong head from being squished between my pelvis and his brother's head. When he was born he couldn't lie facing up because his head rolled to one side. By four months their heads were the same shape, no intervention. Things change a lot as they grow try not to worry about it!
