Success after IF

My new nanny has IF

So we hired a new nanny and today was her first day. I watched her on our security system from my phone and basically all she did all day long was sit there and hold and dote on my LO...which is pretty much exactly what I want.

After I got home, I started talking to her and she is going through IF right now.  She has PCOS and has done 3 rounds of clomid and metformin with no success.  I suggested Femara instead of Clomid and also told her she needs to go to an RE instead of just an OB.  She was saying they were saving up for IUI or IVF.

The crazy thing is that DH and I have more people in our group of friends/acquintances and family members who have had IF problems than those who have not.

IF DX: DOR & Fragile X pre-mutation carrier

Re: My new nanny has IF

  • First, I am so glad you found a new nanny who you like! I am sorry she is IF too though. I have found so many people who are IF since going through it myself. In my group of close friends there are six of us. Three are pregnant or have babies from IVF or FET!

  • It sucks she is struggling too, but it's nice that she has you to talk to about things!

I am completely opposite of you guys in that I hardly knew anyone who struggled with getting pregnant other than one of DH's cousins who ended up adopting and I'm not close with her so we never really talked about that kind of stuff anyway.  I do have an old childhood friend who did IVF, but she never really talks about it.  In fact, out all of my friends bedsides the one I don't know a single person who tried for longer than 3 months before getting pregant so I felt totally isolated and alone during all of our struggles.  That's why I turned to thebump to seek help/support!

I can't wait for the "im getting a divorce" post in 5 years or so because your husbands were fed up with your disgusting chair asses from playing on the knot all day and getting fired 4-5 times for not doing any work. you guys are all winners!! ~ Laur929

  • So glad you were able to find someone. Sorry she's going through IF too, but maybe you can be of some help to her, your advice was good, definitely need to go RE, not OB.
I also knew no one who had any trouble getting KU until I found out my SIL did. Now I know one other person too. But all my friends were either KU the first try or while trying not to.

  • So glad you found a new nanny! That stinks that she is struggling with IF. There is no way I could have nannied a baby or toddler when dealing with IF. Just seeing babies made me so sad.

If all she wants to do is hold your LO, can you clone her and send her my way or the summer?

I have one good friend IRL who struggled with IF. She is finally pregnant from IVF #3, which is super awesome.  One other college friend has IVF twins, but I think that is all of the people I know for sure. I have others that I suspect, but I don't want to ask.

    TTC Since 3/2010
Me-36, Unexplained Infertility, DH-35, all clear

    ET 4/22/12 = 2 transfered (day 3), remaining 3 weren't good enough to freeze
    Beta 5/3 = BFP, 87 Beta #2 5/7 560.9 Beta #3 5/9 1376.5 First u/s One Baby, 125bpm!

  • So far (based on the one day) she seems like she will be a good fit.

I guess I am in the minority of seeming to know a TON of people who have experienced IF.

I have two brothers. Neither have children due to some form of IF.  One, his wife had high FSH (she was also late 30's/early 40's when they were TTC) and then ultimately she had to have a hysterectomy...and they can't afford to adopt. So they will never have children.  The other brother's wife has had two surgeries for fibroids.  They are TTC right now and seeing an RE.  They have tried Clomid without success so my guess is that the next step is either IUI or IVF.  I am sure the fact that she is 38 and he is 44 also contributes to their problems.

I also have a cousin who didn't have a problem getting pregnant, but had a late miscarriage.  Then her brother and his wife are having to adopt because she has Premature Ovarian Failure (at 29!).

One of my college roommates has been going through ART for a year - done about 6 to 8 unsuccessful IUI's in the last year- and they are doing their first round of IVF right now.

One of my other good friends had PCOS and had to take metformin. WHile she was able to get pregnant relatively easily from that, her baby had a chromosomal abnormality & has had major health issues.

One of my other good friends also had PCOS.  Went through multiple rounds of clomid, clomid IUI, etc. Eventually went to injectable IUI's.  Got pregnant with triplets which she miscarried.  Then she got pregnant again through injectable IUI's with triplets, miscarried one and finally had twins.

Another friend had PCOS and was never able to conceive and ended up adopting.

Another good friend went through 7 years of IF, multiple surgeris (for endo) and multiple rounds of IUI and IVF before finally having her daughter.

My DH's best friend had low sperm count. They did IVF with no success and ended up adopting.

And my paralegal (she tells me her problem was "crappy eggs" but I suspect she had DOR) tried on her own for several years with charting, then did like a years worth of IUI's and then several IVF cycles before finally having her daughter.  Her story is probably even more remarkable because out of several IVF cycles, they only made it to transfer ONE TIME with ONE EGG and that one egg is now her daughter.

...and there are probably more I can't think of. Whew.  That is alot of IF!!!  Maybe there is something in the water down here in Texas!!!!!!!!

  • I am so glad you found a nanny you feel comfortable with.  I am sure your nanny could benefit from your vast knowledge in the area of IF.  I know of one friend who went through IVF & I don't think I would ever have known, if I hadn't opened up to her one time.  Outside of that I don't know of anyone else & I am pretty confident that I am not the only one of my friends & family that is going through this, I think that the stigma attached to IF makes people less forthcoming with their struggles.  It's a shame, as it is such an isolating experience & it would be nice to be able to empathize & support each other.

  • I'm glad you are happy with her so far. I'm sure there is a reason you two have been brought together. :)

I know at least 5 of the girls in my sorority pledge class have struggled with IF and have had children through fert frugs+TI, IUI, IVF, or adoption. And those are just the ones I have opened up to. There are  few others who are still child free and I'm not entirely sure if that is by choice or not.

Plus, my first cousin is struggling with 2IF.

The more open I am about my own struggles, the more people share theirs with me. :)
