My husband and I are having a really hard time with girl's names! I want something that will fit her from birth until she's an old lady (which is really hard)! And also whether she's a girly girl or a tomboy. My husband has an E name and so we were thinking of girl's names with E - but that isn't set in stone. I really like Ella, Emma, Ellie, etc but those names are all too common. I don't want the kid to have the same name as other people in her class. I think I saw "Elsie" in some movie credits and it kind of stuck on me. I don't know anyone with this name, I don't know if it's an old fogie name, or what the history is. I rarely see it in baby name books or online. Any thoughts?

Ugh, DH loves this name and I am not a fan. I second PP, Emily, Elise and Evangeline are great 'E' names.
my read shelf:
I don't think it's pretty sounding-- sorry! I also get "cow" from this name.
What about
Elsa
Elise
Ellery
Everly
Esther
Esme
Etta
Eileen
Elena
Eliana

I really like Elsie. It is a family name for us and stays on our list. However, I do think it is too much of a NN.
Might I suggest Elsa nn Elsie?
It was my mom's middle name. She hated it, because of the cow thing, and eventually changed it.
I kind of like it. I don't think of the cow. My mom's middle name was after my great-grandmother Ersilia (whose nickname was Elsie) - that's probably really an old lady name, but it has family significance and I would probably consider it as a MN if we didn't already have so many other options. I think Elsie would be a very nice NN, though I doubt I'd use it as a FN on its own.
I think it's a sweet name, actually. But honestly the first thing that comes to my mind is Elsie the Cow.
If you can get past the connection, it's not a bad name. Just an unfortunate association.

It does seem a bit of a NN to me.
Plus, I find it a very hipster name (cue all the hipsters saying - "MY daughter is Elsie and I am NOT a hipster, it's probably just to obscure for you")
Don't get me wrong. I think hipsters are great (for the economy, the beer scene, and the food blog world) but I definitely associate a somewhat popular blogger with the name and she is so super hipster that I can't get past an image of a little girl with skinny jeans, toms, and thick frame glasses.
I do like Elise though!
This! I was going to suggest Elise or Etta.
Lawlz. I love this, DH & I are sort of a borderline hipsters. DD is Eloise Clementine NN Elsie.
i love it and the name Elise
I personally think it fits your criteria very well!
I will say though, that I do know two Elsies that are under the age of 3, but it could be a "regional" name.
If my husband's cousin hadn't used it for her daughter, I would have seriously considered it.
