Flu shot or not to Flu shot?

UGH

I never gave Alex a flu shot.  I have had two in my life and each one made me deadly sick.  One ending with a three month bout of Broncial Pnuemonia. (I did lose a bunch of weight though!)

SO I've never given it to the kids - Rod's never had one either.

But everyone and their mother wants me to give Willow her flu shot - and I guess it's really important this year (as per a newspaper)?

I don't know - I still don't want to

Re: Flu shot or not to Flu shot?

  • I'd do more research. My chiropractor doesn't do the flu shots for his boy but I know another family who gets them like clockwork. Really, it's a personal choice as long as you meet the criteria. I think the hardest thing is standing up for yourself and your decision...whatever it may be. Whichever way you decide, I would make sure it's because YOU want it and not because some other people are saying you have to or don't have to.

One way to do it is to google Flu Shot and then Flu Shot Risks. Check your sources though, some are opinion peices or not based on research.

As for me, I'm not getting a shot (and not just because I'm pregnant).

  • They say every year that it's going to be the worst year yet. I don't buy it anymore. It's like saying that it will be partly cloudy with a chance of rain when you live in Seattle... overrated!

But, with that said, I got mine this year for the first time and DD will get hers also. She will get her first dose this month and her second next month. I have never had a vaccine reaction and I felt totally fine after my flu shot. DD id probably at a lower risk for getting sick because she is EBF and doesn't go to childcare. She has done very well with all of her vaccines though so I don't mind having her get it and our pedi recommended vaccinating her this year.

  • No flu shot for DS.  He's highly allergic to eggs.
  • This is the first year I have ever got the flu shot. My OB basically made me at my 6 weeks check as I am high risk having Isabelle. However, I do not plan to ever give it to Isabelle. I never got them as a child and neither did any of my siblings. Isabelle is on a alternate vac schedule at that is def one we are not doing. I have done a lot of research on this and feel pretty strong about that and some other ones. A good book is The Vaccine Book by Dr Sears.

  • I firmly believe in getting the flu shot unless there is a medical reason not to (i.e. allergies). I won't go into the boring details but for me it just isn't worth the risk.

In the interest of full disclosure: I am a brainwashed healthcare employee.

  • We don't do the flu shot. I also try my hardest to stay away from antibiotics too, but that is just my style.
    Mama to Z - 5.5 years, G - 3.5 years, & M - 1.5 years.
  • We did the flu shot becuase she is in Daycare and has a higher risk of being exposed. Evie had no issues or reaction. We just got her 2nd shot last night.
  • All three of us got the flu shot this year.  Payton will get her second dose last week.  I made sure to get it because I don't want to get the flu while PG.  DD got it because she's in daycare and germs spread around there like crazy - all those snot nosed little kids!  And DH has to because he works with the public = nasty.  lol  None of us had any side effects.
  • DS & I both got the preservative-free ones this year.  I am a firm believer, though...
  • We didn't get it, our pedi didn't even offer it.  When I asked her about it she said that DD didn't need it because she's not in daycare and I'm still BFing.  I've never had one either.

  • with kids in day care or school, I would 100% get the flu shot.

The flu shot can't make you sick.  It isn't a live virus.  The nasal inhaler kind is live, so that *could* make you sick in theory.  I think (not sure) that many years ago the shot contained live virus.  But it doesn't now.  So you could have an allergic reaction, or you can get a little bit of a reaction like our kids do - a low fever, sore arm - but it won't give you the flu.
