I want opinions on a few mythology-related names I've been thinking about lately...yes, actual opinions, not just 'nms'. Which (if any) do you think are usable, which sound like dirty words, which sound like uneducated strippers from the trailer park, etc. All are for girls:
Ione (Ee-oh-nee)
Xanthe (Zan-the)
Ianthe (Ee-an-the)
Thalia
Phaedra
Ariadne
Damara
Elara
Clio
Re: Some different mythology names for girls...
The only one on that list I like is Elara. The only ones I could actually see people pronouncing include Thalia (Thal-ee-uh?), Phaedra (Fay-dra?), Clio (Clee-oh?), Damara seems obvious enough. None of them sound like stripper names or dirty words, they're just not names that are easily spelled or pronounced.
The one mythology name I absolutely love is Athena.
I would not side-eye any of these, but I majored in classics, so I'm an oddball. My favorites are Thalia (reminds me, this his never been on my short list but I've always really liked it), Clio, and Ariadne.
I love the name Ariadne! I think it sounds classic and sophisticated.
Elara is beautiful. I've never really considered it before. It sounds kind of modern. Almost like a name from a sci-fi series.
I also like Ione and Ianthe but fear they would be butchered constantly.
Xanthe, Thalia, and Phaedra are nice but a bit to heavy for my taste.
Damara and Clio seem to be lacking...I would call them strippers though.
Awe I was hoping to see Persephone on the list....I love that name but have not guts to use it.
Ione - will be mispronounced too often. Sounds like a dolphin noise to me.
Xanthe - Spelling will throw everyone off and makes me think of a prescription drug.
Ianthe (Ee-an-the) - i like this one
Thalia - Not my fav but I can see a little girl with this name fitting in
Phaedra - Not sure how to pronounce this but it reminds me of the hat
Ariadne - LOVE. DH vetoed but I still like it
Damara - Don't like this one...I think the Da part bothers me
Elara - Looks like misspelled Clara
Clio - Like it though it reminds me of a cat

I think Ione, Xanthe, Phaedra, Thalia are all usable.
Ione -- I love this name, and I think it's very usable. I've actually known two little girls with this name, and one with it for a middle name. They have all pronounced it EYE-oh-nee.
Xanthe -- Good substitute for Zoe. I think it's very usable.
Ianthe -- Also usable. It means "violet", doesn't it?
Thalia -- One of the most usable on the list. I've often thought Clio and Thalia would be lovely names for sisters. (They're the two most usable muse names, I think.)
Phaedra -- I've heard numerous people on baby name message boards considering this one. To be honest, I think it's kind of ugly. I think it must be the "-dra" part at the end, since I don't like Kendra or Audra either. But it's just as usable as Kendra, Freya, and Fiona.
Ariadne -- I went to high school with an Ariadne. It feels like a more glamorous version of the popoular Ariana, so I would say it's extremely usable.
Damara -- The first syllable probably makes this one a bad idea. I say this as someone who likes names like Damaris and Damien and Damon -- but I probably wouldn't use them myself. What about Demetra (a family name on my mother's Greek side)?
Elara -- Usable, but the most boring on the list. She'd be lost among the Alanas and Aleahs and Elenas and Alisas. It sounds like a made up string of pretty sounds. If you're looking for something that DOESN'T stand out, this could be a good choice.
Clio -- Very usable, I think! It's a great alternative to Chloe, it's simple and easy to spell, and it has the cool "-o" ending that makes it stand out from other girls' names.
I love Ione and Ariadne. I've only heard Ione pronounced Eye-oh-knee, (as in Ione Skye)
I know it's pronounced differently, but I keep going to gena-talia when I see Thalia.
And Clio still brings up thoughts of Miss Cleo's psychic network for me.
Thalia and Ariadne could definitely work. Spelling and pronounciation won't be a problem. Elara might get you a few odd looks (Clara? Lara? Mara? Elena? etc.), but I think that it should be okay. I'm not a big fan of the sound and think that it could be seen as a u-neek attempt to get Ellie as a NN. Damara and Clio are nice, but will be mistaken for Tamara and Cleo (isn't Clio the name of a car as well? Renault Clio?). Ione, Xanthe and Ianthe look 'too difficult' (a person unfamiliar with Greek mythology might think you decided on your daughter's name whilst playing Scrabble). Phaedra is the name of Peaches Geldoff's unborn son (why do I even know this?), so that's my main association.
All in all, I think that Thalia and Ariadne are the most usable ones.
Bonnie- I actually LOVE DemeterDemetria but unfortunately DH does not like either of them at all so I doubt he would go for Demetra either, unfortunately.
I had always said Ione like Eye as well, but I looked up pronunciation and it said the Greek was Ee-on-ee, so I went with that, but looks like that is probably not common outside Greece?
Unfortunately I just mentioned Clio to DH and he started talking in Miss Cleo's voice. So that one's out. And he thinks Thalia sounds like Fail-ya. At least he still likes Calliope.
I like Phaedra the most, it is so pretty. I must know someone with this name because it sounds so familiar to me.
I also think Ione, Xanthe, Thalia, and Ariadne are useable.
The font make Clio really hard for me to read.
Dislike Damara. My first thought is it is too close to the boy name Damarcus. Also I can see the first syllable turning into teases like DUH!-mara or Dumb-mara.
Bolded are names I would consider
Ione (Ee-oh-nee) - I don't like the sound of it.
Xanthe (Zan-the) - NMS, but I wouldn't side-eye the name.
Ianthe (Ee-an-the) - Again, I just don't like the sound of it.
Thalia - love! DH thinks it sounds like 'Tail' and he thinks of Sonic the hedgehog
Phaedra - I think this is pretty, and I like the the option to have Phae / Fay as a nickname
Ariadne - absolutely love!
Damara - I think this is okay.
Elara - Don't like that Ee sound, I think.
Clio - cly-o? I prefer Cleo, but then I think of a cat.
Ione (Ee-oh-nee)- Pronunciation nightmare
Xanthe (Zan-the)- Just ok. I think the X kind of makes it seem trendy. Also seems masculine.
Ianthe (Ee-an-the)- Don't know what to say about this one other than NMS.
Thalia- Nice name
Phaedra- I just picture a really woman who is a biotch. Not sure why. Perhaps because of the RHWOA
Ariadne- Don't know how to pronounce this one.
Damara- Just doesn't sound pretty to me.
Elara- Pretty.
Clio
I also like Eris and Theia!
Rainbow Surprise Baby due 05/26/2017
Ione - it's nice, but I wonder about lots of pronunciation problems. I think of the actress Ione Skye.
Xanthe - I do not care for X names, especially for girls.
Ianthe - eh, this is just okay...maybe it's the -the ending I don't like?
Thalia - I really like this one, though I foresee pronunciation problems.
Phaedra - I knew a Phaedra once...I don't like the sound
Ariadne - LOVE
Damara - not bad, but like Tamara might have 2 different common pronunciations (da-MAR-uh and da-MAHR-uh)
Elara - just okay for me
Clio - not bad
My favorites are Thalia and Ariadne.

Being a huge classics geek, I'm probably more pro-mythological names than most people, but I like most of these.
Ione (Ee-oh-nee)---beautiful name, but a bit difficult to pronounce.
Xanthe (Zan-the)--Pretty easy to pronounce and gorgeous.
Ianthe (Ee-an-the)--I prefer Xanthe but this isn't a bad choice either.
Thalia--Good name.
Phaedra--I don't like it as much as some of the others, but not bad.
Ariadne--Very pretty. I like it.
Damara and Elara are the only two I really don't like.
Clio--a little too much like Cleo for my taste, but the muse-of-history connection is awesome.
Damara
Elara
Clio
The rest are interesting.

**RATE A NAME HERE!**
I think most will be pronounced wrong at first but whatever. I don't think any of them are stripper or trashy!
