Gallon, Pint, Cup.. Water breaking

I am attempting to work up until our LO decides he is ready to be here. I have an office job so I'm sitting most of the day and work with mostly ladies but am around men occasionally. I am SO worried that when my water breaks I will be A) around a bunch of men that might actually pass out or never be able to look at me again and B) in a chair that I would INSIST on hauling out to the dumpster before I went to the hospital. Please tell me that I am being paranoid/unreasonable to worry that I might actually flood the building I work in.. I'm almost tempted to go Lisa Nowak style and wear diapers to avoid the embarrassment of it all. Are overnight pads heavy enough to catch most of it?

Please help me after you stop laughing at me..

Re: Gallon, Pint, Cup.. Water breaking

  • Fortunately with DD, my water broke while I was at home, but it was a gush and I was unfortunately in bed...and left a trail to the bathroom.  My sister had a trickle all day and a pad was all she needed.  I am nervous too as to what this baby will do cause I am working up until delivery as well.

  • I actually have this same fear.  We were joking about it at the dr office today.  I went into labor with DS without my water breaking so I really hope that is how this one will go too.  Or I pray that it will happen on the weekend with minimal embarrassment to be had.  Stick out tongue

I'm going to put a toddler size mattress cover on my side of the bed pretty quickly just to avoid the wet mattress situation.

  • That is a great idea, thanks for the suggestion.
  • This may be weird but I had a miscarriage before this pregnancy and my water broke which I didn't know would happen in a miscarriage at only 12 weeks.. It was a lot of water!! I was wearing water proof snow pants at the timelong story so it could have been worse.. But it was a lot of water and I had a pretty thick pad on and it didn't really catch much..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • My water didn't break naturally. I thought most people's water breaks at the hospital and its usually not a gush.

  • They broke my water at the hospital and it felt like a gallon, but I'm sure it wasn't nearly as much as it felt like it was.  I'm planning on working until the bitter end as well.  I plan to have towels in the car as I get closer because I heard that amniotic fluid is really hard to get out of carseats.  Aside from that, I'm not super concerned about it breaking at my job (I'm a teacher and aside from kids thinking I peed my pants, I work with a bunch of women who would just be super excited for me- the custodian may not be as excited!!)

  • My water broke at home at it was quite a big gush intially then slowed down to a trickle.  I pad probably wouldn't have contained it all.
  • My MIL is an OB/GYN nurse and she said only about 15-20% of women have their water break on its own....but I can understand your dilemna!

  • We joke about this very thing at work all the time.  We've even come up with a code word - Pistachios.  If anyone hears me yell that, it means my water broke.  But in all seriousness, I'd really rather not have it happen at the office, which is why I'm taking a full week's vacation before my due date.  I know the timing could still be off, but it's the best I could come up with :)  I think that the off-chance that my water does break at work would be...awkward...for everyone.  But, hey, worse things could happen!

  • My water broke at home.  I put two overnight pads in my underwear and I didn't have my pants up before I had soaked through them.  By the time we got to the hospital (10 minutes later) my pants were soaked all the way to the ankles front and back. Unfortunately, if your water breaks on it's own (and doesnt just tear with a slow leak) you probably won't be able to hide it.  Fortunately, few people have their water break before labor begins.
