Infant gas and food sensitivity

In your experiences, do infants have a lot of gas issues anyways despite having no food sensitivities? DD is 2 months and started having some tummy issues and her gas sounded forceful around week six or seven. I had been eating dairy all along but that particular week I was eating this soup with a lot of cream and dairy and onions in it. Do you think it was just an overload of dairy and onion or do you think she had a sensitivity develop late in the game? I started eliminating things from my diet such as dairy and anything spicy, and it seemed to be helping just a little bit with the gas. Her pediatrician seem to think it was normal for her to be having those issues at this stage and told me to not kill myself over trying to eliminate everything from my diet. I just cant help but think that something I am eating is causing her tummy to hurt but if this is normal, then I will stop eliminating things. We have been giving her gripe water to help with her tummy and it seems to help her a lot if we stay on it. Any advice would be great!

Re: Infant gas and food sensitivity

  • I just tried to watch what I was eating if I noticed it give the baby trouble.  Like I noticed that he had gas if I had eaten red onions.  Also I had a gyro one night and that really seemed to upset his stomach the next day, I felt really bad.  I never eliminated dairy or anything.  I think you can go crazy trying to eliminate things if it's really just a one time thing.  Based on what you're describing, I would assume your baby's issue was from the soup you ate, all the dairy and onion.

It's normal for a baby to have some gas.  I keep gas drops on hand and when my LO was newborn to about 4 months old, we used gripe water a lot.  He hasn't really needed gripe water in quite a while but we still give him gas drops at least a couple of times a week.

  • I think it sounds totally normal.  If there was a dairy sensitivity, it would be more obvious and constant.  It takes a while for the tummy to regulate, so it's normal to have gas suddenly starting around that age.  I would just try gas drops.
