Success after IF

quick Q about freezing BM

I had expressed a bottle of BM few days ago, expecting to use it tonight when I go out to a concert.  W/the snowstorm hitting us, the concert is cancelled, so we don't need the BM anymore.  I'd like to freeze it for future use.

Right now, the refrigerated BM has separated.  I swirled it a bit and the fatty stuff on top is breaking up into pieces.  Should I let it warm up a little so the fat can redistribute into the liquid part?  I can't freeze it the way it is right now because of the chunks of fat...

Re: quick Q about freezing BM

  • Just keep swirling it till it's all together.  It'll warm up some, that's fine.

Ditto. I would just swirl more and let the air temp warm it up on it's own.

  • hmm... I think I have put mine in the freezer separated before! Eek, I hope that was ok! I have been using the 2.5 oz storage tubes to freeze and DH has been the only one to thaw them.  I know he had to get them completely unthawed by putting them under running warm water.  He knows to swirl them so I hope he would have told me if they didn't mix back together.

It's fine to do it while it's separated.  What I was assuming was that a lot of the fat was still stuck to the sides/top of the bottle.  And you don't want to lose those precious calories for LO when you pour them into a bag.

Oh gotcha! I will keep that in mind when I switch to bags.

Pnut, like TJ said, you should be okay.

I was asking b/c I had a 5oz bottle and I wanted to freeze it in 2 separate bags (2oz and 3oz), so I felt like the fat needed to be remixed back into the milk before I can pour it out into 2 bags.

  • I usually just put it into a bag and gently squish it back and forth with my hand to sort of redistribute the fat.
