April 2012 Moms

2 nights in hospital with LO :(

We have had a crazy 2013 and I need to vent! At DDs 9 mo appt on Jan 9, the Dr was concerned with her weight (15 lb, 25 in) and suggested we see a dietitian. I said I would up the foods and try myself. One week later we are there for a double ear infection = Amoxicillin. The next week we are there because of wheezing = nebulizer. She was healthy for one week at the end of January, then got another cold. Her appetite totally decreased (6oz per day!), then she has vomiting and diarrhea. Trip to Dr. (not her normal Pedi), said she didn't have signs of dehydration, let the virus run its course. Three days later, my Pedi was in so I asked her to look at the notes from other Dr. She wanted to see DD, so we went in. Dr said to get blood work done... so I waited for DH to get home and at 6pm we went. Of course, they poked her arms three times and couldn't get it between three different people trying and DH holing her down! The next person got a vein in her hand. We went home and DD fell fast asleep. Her Pedi calls at 8:45pm, saying go to ER for an IV, she is dehydrated. I said "really? she is sleeping..." Pedi says "let me be more clear: you need to go to the ER, I'm calling them to tell them you're on your way." ...Wow, ok, she means business. So we get to ER at 9:15... DD gets an IV. We are in the ER room until 2am when they finally decide to admit her. So, we get a pediatric room with a cage (crib). DD can't move with the IV (her hand was wrapped with gauze over the IV like a cast, with a board to get it straight). So, DH, DD, and I slept in the one hospital bed... no sleep. I had to work a 1/2 day the next day, so I got up at 5:30, went home then to work. Spent second night there too. DD was finally eating on her own that day, and was acting much better. Her labs came back better, though not 100%. Got home yesterday at 3pm! We are exhausted. LO has bruises on her hands and arms... so sad, but we are happy she is better. Already ate 21 oz today! the most she's eaten in over 2 weeks! Thanks for listening!

Re: 2 nights in hospital with LO :(

  • How scary! So sorry to hear you've dealt with this. It seems like we've been dealing with a constant cold and snotty nose. This season has been a rough one. Hang in there and get some much needed sleep. Hope LO is back to normal very soon!

  • Aww poor baby! Babies are so resilient. I am so sorry you all had to go through this. I'm glad she is doing much better, and you, too! I hope things calm down for awhile now after your very stressful January.  : )

  • I can't imagine how stressful and scary that was for you. I'm so glad she is feeling better though!!!
  • Thanks Mamas! She ate 28 oz yesterday after being home for a full day! She hasn't eaten that much since early Jan! The plan is to offer bottles first, then an hour later, try some cereal, etc. She was 14.2 lbs in the ER, so the plan is to really get her some fluids and calories! Happy 10 months to her!
