Formula for an EBF 9 month old

Could you suggest formula brands for a 9 month old who has only had breastmilk and food? I'm pregnant and I'm worried I won't be able to feed him the 24-30ish oz the doctor suggests until we start wcm at a year. I thought I'd offer a sippy of formula at one of his meals just to make sure he's good on nutrition. I have no idea what brands are out there. I'm not educated at all in formula. I appreciate any suggestions.

Re: Formula for an EBF 9 month old

  • I don't think it really matters, we were on Similac but now use the generic for BJ's.  I asked our pedi and she said it was fine as long as they were milk based.  If you look at the ingredients there are only 2 differences and she said it wasn't anything important.

  • I have heard breastfed babies tend to like the Nestle Goodstart better than other brands. We have not tried it. DS switched from BM to Up and Up (Target generic) and back again just fine.

  • With my first LO, I stopped breastfeeding at 9 months.  I tried everything.  She hated everything except Similac Alimentum (and only the read-to-feed one).  (BTW--she has no food allergies or colic.)  She wouldn't touch the powder either.

Good luck.  I had such a tough time with my first LO.

  • I EBFd DD for 4.5 months and then added a bottle or two of regular Similac without any issues.

She is now weaned and only eating the regular Similac and solids.

  • I stopped BFing at 8 months.  DD drank similac powder no problem.  However, she NEVER drank 24-30oz.  Usually it was 14-16oz a day and never more than 4oz at a time.  I dont think most BF babies can handle a huge 8oz bottle.  Your LO is starting the transition to all solids at 9 months so I wouldnt be too worried about the number of oz as long as he is following the same growth curve.

  • DS takes Target's Up and Up brand which is the generic of Similac Advance.

  • Thanks for the suggestions! The Pediatrician said he should still be eating at least 24oz. I thought that sounded strange or should taper because 24oz of wcm sounds like a lot if we kept the same intake at one year. I think I'm still producing at least 20oz. I just thought I might offer a cup of formula at lunch or something. Thanks for the tips though!
