How does this board feel about crib rail covers?

I know bumpers are not widely used anymore due to safety, and I agree and would rather not use one. However, a crib looks awfully empty to me without the bumper, so I like the idea of a matching rail cover.

How does everyone feel about those?

  • Some people like them if you end up with a little beaver. We have an ikea crib and they sell covers that snap on and are basically transparent. We bought them but you hardly notice them. We just have colorful fitted sheets and I don't think it looks strange. We didn't do a dust ruffle either. Our decoration and color is elsewhere in the nursery.

  • Take a look at the Skip Hop Complete Sheets. They have a separate design that goes around the side of the mattress that sort of mimics the look of a crib bumper and makes the crib feel less "naked." We have a couple and they're really cute.

  • I got them and started using them when DD started standing up in her crib and biting the rail--I think she was about 10m.

  • My mom made us some to use when DS could pull up on the crib and would bite the rails. Ours were just brown corduroy, but I've seen some really cute prints.

  • We have one and it's strictly for function, not the looks. DS was going to town teething on the rails and it also provided some cushioning for me when I lean in to get him.  I don't think it's a safety issue at all.  By the time DS was old enough to get it off, he was well over a year and was past the SiDS risk.

  • I have never thought about them as decorative. I didn't have one on DS1's crib and wish I did since we now have bite marks. I will be putting one on DS2's crib when he starts pulling up.

  • I've never even seen a decorative teething rail. We have the plastic ones from IKEA for function. We had colorful walls and decor instead of a fancy bedding set. I second the idea of the Skip Hop complete sheets. They came out way after I designed the nursery, but that's the route I would have gone otherwise.

  • If you buy a bedding set that comes with a bumper that you don't plan on using, I would make the bumper into a rail cover.

DS1 was always biting the crib and the plastic/rubber snap-on things either didn't fit or he would just take them off and play with them.  So I made my own cover out of fabric.  But if you use the bumper to make it, it would match and look cute, as well as be protective.

  • They were necessary for me when my DD started pulling up in the crib. She gnawed the heck out of the side rail.  We got these: https://www.amazon.com/Trend-Lab-Guard-Guards-Natural-Fleece/dp/B00208RWVK/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1360345796&sr=8-2&keywords=fleece+crib+rail and they've been great.
