Drea and other baby-wearers...

What are your thoughts on the Mei Tai? I love the look of it, the pictures show it being used for front and back carries and it says it can hold up to 35 pounds comfortably. I'm tempted to order one...thoughts? Here's a link to the picture gallery.

Sorry! I like how it looks like a wrap but it's a little more structured. I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to babywearing and I'm scared that I'll make an expensive mistake!

I don't know much either. I'm going to be getting a few options this time. this one seems to be about the avg price for a mei tai. Someone at my local "fancy" baby store recommended Babyhawk so I've been leaning toward that, but I'm going to really look at this one too.

  • What are the benefits of a mei tai vs a soft structured carrier like an Ergo?

    (Trying to learn!)

  • I'm enjoying all of these baby-wearing posts (not that I have any info to add).

I have a hand-me-down ergo from my sister, but I'm likely going to buy a woven wrap also.  They are good for any stage, right?  Even newborn?

I'm also eyeing a Mei Tai.  I'm FTM and I'm wondering if I should just buy my first wrap now and start practicing?

This website seems to have pretty decent prices and a large selection (if you aren't using the swap boards that Drea's posted before): https://wovenwraps.com/

  • I have both a mei tai and a Boba similar to an Ergo. I really liked the mei tai when my DS was small enough to be on my front. It has more structure than a wrap but was really affordable. When I started putting him on my back I quickly realized it was scarier to get him on my back with something that doesn't have set straps! I love the Boba for that and as he's gotten heavier it's my go to now and I have a Moby only good to 15 lbs, ring sling, mei tai and Boba. Plus hubby is much more likely to carry in the Boba than something with long straps he has to remember how to wrap.

  • I'm actually on the search for a new mei tai. We currently have the Infantino brand one (the Sash, I think it's called) and I'm not the biggest fan of this particular one (but the price is GREAT!) because it's pretty thick and kind of digs in. M HATED it when we first got it, but that could have been just me because I wasn't comfortable putting her in a back carry yet. She didn't like the front carry because she couldn't see anything, so we stashed it away and stuck with our Maya Wrap Ring Sling. She LOVED the front facing carry in that, but it only worked until she was about 17lbs and then my arm would go numb and my neck would kill. So around 6 months we tried the mei tai again, back carry this time, and she loved it! I really like it too, especially when I do a Tibetan tie/carry... very comfy (minus the straps cutting into me... purely the brand though). Currently I have my eyes on an ObiMama with the padded to wrap style shoulder straps.... but they are so pricey used and hard to get a hold of new so I'm on the search for something similar (totally up for suggestions Drea! Or anyone else lol).

  • Anyone ever use the K'tan?

Obviously not as pretty as a ring sling or woven would be, but if I'm thinking 1 woven and a mei tai, I wonder if this might be better than a mei tai?

ETA: Upon reading more reviews it sounds like the fabric might be stretchy sort of like the moby.

Yeah, I've heard the stretchy fabrics get unbearably hot.
