Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Changing nipple size

How old is your LO and what size nipple do you use? If you moved up from size 1, how did you know it was time to move up? What signs did you LO show you?

My dd is 11 weeks and she is ff and eats 5 to 6 oz each feeding.
Lately after about half the bottle she starts to turn her head away. I thought maybe it was gas, wanting to look around or simply just telling me that she is done but after only 3oz...I doubt it.
So she will turn her head away. I keep the bottle at the same place I don't follow her with it then she will turn back to the bottle and open wide for it and take another sip or two and turn away again. She will do this for most of the last 3oz of the bottle. So then I thought maybe it's the size of the nipple but if she wanted it to come out faster I don't think she would turn away from it?!?

Re: Changing nipple size

  • I use doctor brown bottles and they tell you an estimate on when to up the size. I switched my LO to size 2 at 3 months and shes still on it at 5 months. Youll know if its too soon of a switch by if they cough or choke a lot.

  • My LO is 4 months and is currently using a size 1 Dr Browns nipple.  However, daycare just suggested we move to a size 2, since they say LO is taking ~30 minutes to finish a bottle (they didn't say anything about turning away).  When DH gives a bottle at home, it doesn't take nearly that long though, so I'm not sure if we will go to size 2 or not (I BF and have heard that keeping the nipple flow slow will help baby not prefer bottle to breast).  We will try size 2 this weekend and see how it goes...
  • We use Dr Brown and switched LO from level one to level two at about 2 months.. she would stop in the middle of her feeding and cry or seemed irritated. Ped suggested a switch and it worked great.

  • Of course she just ate her last bottle with no problem. It was also 4.5 hrs since her last so she must have been hungry.
But then again last night she slept from 9p to 7a and her morning bottle she did it. Ate about 3oz fine then kept turning away for he second half of te bottle.
I will have to try a size 2 and see what happens. Thanks!!
  • Maybe she's full after 3 oz? If she's turning away it could be that she's full...
  • My lo turnes also I think its just being nosey and wanting to see and hear everything that is going on. He is almost 5 months and we r still on level 1 he does fine with the level 1s he takes 6 oz each feeding. The level 2 he sucks down to fast cause it comes out to fast and he still acts hungry when he eats it that fast.
